Was issue 180 of The Walking Dead comic book series any good? Here are the good, bad, and interesting things from ‘New World Order Part 6 of 6’!

The Walking Dead released issue 180 of their popular comic book series titled ‘New World Order Part 6 of 6’ on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 and continued the story of The Commonwealth interacting with Alexandria.

With Pamela Milton arriving to meet Rick Grimes, the events of the June 2018 issue set up what could have been either a friendly meeting between the communities or set the gears in motion for a battle between them.

The good news is that there are some great things that happened in the issue and some things weren’t so awesome. Let’s talk about the good, bad, and interesting things!

The Good Stuff

  • Dwight is ready to apologize. For a while, it looked like Dwight could be the next villain in the comics, but it appears as though he has calmed down since the accidental death of Sherry in Rick’s office.
  • Eugene getting some love. It’s great to see characters getting praise for something other than being a great fighter or doing manual labor. The two communities might be fighting over his talents, which could be interesting.
  • A little flirting. At first, it looked as though Rick and Pamela might become good friends or more, making their relationship complicated considering conversations that came later. And complicated issues usually make for great storylines.

  • The Bad Things

    • Ending with a staredown. Wow. You could cut the tension with a knife at the end of the issue when Pamela and Rick disagreed about how communities should be run. It should be enough to make any reader nervous about the future of their favorite characters.
    • A little bit of tedium. While the panels with Pamela checking out the mill and eating an apple were charming, they felt like they were only to set up the later confrontation. Feeding so many positive things into the issue before hitting readers with intensity really messes with emotions.

    Interesting Notes

    • Rick automatically accepting Princess. It was fun seeing Pamela and Rick talk about Princess’ energy and his surprise that she is joining them, not representing The Commonwealth. She’s interesting and fun, and could add a good layer to the story in Alexandria.
    • The release date. So, New World Order Part 6 of 6 came out on 6 of 6 (June sixth). If that isn’t a fun little Easter Egg with the comics, nothing is!
    • The Alpha variant cover. Bill Sienkiewicz has done a great job with the variant covers and the brightness of Alpha on issue 180 is quite interesting and highlights one of the characters who made the biggest impact.

As a whole, this entire issue was to set up a showdown between Pamela and Rick where their ideas for how the communities are run clash. Sadly, that meant there was no action and very little other development aside from a little more Dwight’s change of heart and plea to Tara.

It was alright, but not great or groundbreaking in any way and was a low-key end the New World Order story arc. ISSUE GRADE: 7.2/10
