12. Carl Sneaks Into The Sanctuary

Season 7, “Sing Me A Song”

Carl was never one to back down from a challenge or a fight. And when he got the chance to sneak into some of The Saviors’ trucks that were bound for The Sanctuary, he hid inside of one to hitch a ride to The Sanctuary and kill Negan. It was a foolish, if heroic choice. At that point in the All Out War timeline, no one even knew where The Sanctuary was. So Jesus tagged along in the truck so that the could find out where Negan’s home base was. But Carl was not thinking about doing anything smart like reconnaissance. He just wanted to kill Saviors, and hopefully kill Negan.

Carl found some heavy weaponry in the truck and he did manage to kill a couple of Saviors. But he didn’t kill Negan. Instead, he ended up having to spend the day with Negan and put up with Negan humiliating him and being a jerk to him. But Negan actually liked Carl and he took him back to Alexandria instead of killing him. When Carl did die Negan appeared to be genuinely upset about it.

Carl’s choice to try and take out Negan before he could kill any more of the survivors from Alexandria or The Hilltop was a bold one and typical of the kind of decisions that Carl made. He wanted to protect his friends and get justice for Glenn and Abe and no one can fault him for that even if that desire caused to make him a foolhardy although heroic choice.
