Hershel and Maggie save Glenn.

Season 4, episode 5 “Internment”

Sonya says:

Even after nine seasons “Internment” remains ones of the standout episodes of The Walking Dead. It’s one of the darkest but most brilliant episodes and it really highlights the bond that these survivors have with each other. And Scott Wilson’s performance in this episode was stunning.

With quiet courage and faith in the midst of being surrounded by death Hershel is helping as many people as he can while they wait for the medication Daryl and the others are bringing back. Glenn worsens as chaos erupts in the cell block and Maggie fights her way into the cell block to help her father and Glenn.

Glenn is near death. They need a respirator in order to save him, but the only one around is currently being worn by the walker who tried to kill Lizzie who is unreachable. Hershel, with Herculean effort and strength, manages to get the respirator and together and he Maggie fight to save Glenn. It doesn’t look good for Glenn but Maggie and Hershel work with one purpose and they manage to pull him through.

It’s a small moment, it’s not a big bombastic heroic moment, but it’s a powerful vignette of a family moment, apocalypse style, showing the vast love that Maggie and her father have for each other, and for Glenn. And it’s that kind of unspoken love and devotion that is truly the heart of The Walking Dead. Characters who are so connected and love each other so much that they will risk anything and do anything to have one more minute with the people they love.
