Could Jeffrey Dean Morgan don Batman’s cape and cowl in The Flash?

After the excitement of HBO Max’s news about the holy grail of comic book movies, also known as the “Snyder Cut” of 2017’s Justice League, the buzz about future DC Comics movies has been at a fever pitch. Recently, the Hollywood rumor mill started swirling around Jeffrey Dean Morgan reprising his role as Thomas Wayne, only this time it would be for The Flash movie…and he could even play Batman.

For the DC Comics uninitiated, in 2011 Geoff Johns wrote an elseworlds story where the Flash, aka Barry Allen, goes back in time and alters the future. His actions lead to a crisis known as “Flashpoint” where characters that fans once knew emerged with very different stories.

In the case of the Dark Knight, that long ago moment in Crime Alley saw a very different outcome: Instead of young Bruce Wayne watching his parents die, it’s Wayne family patriarch Thomas who sees his wife and young son die in front of his eyes. That moment leads to Thomas Wayne eventually becoming the Batman, and in this universe Batman is a lot different than the one we know.

Morgan played Thomas Wayne in a brief flashback in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. If the rumors are true, DC could be calling upon Morgan to reprise the role for The Flash movie starring Justice League’s Ezra Miller in the titular role, and that means that Morgan’s Thomas Wayne would become Batman.

It must be noted that casting hasn’t even started yet, but Morgan’s name is already floating around and The Walking Dead actor had already expressed interest in reprising the role. The movie is slated for a 2022 release but that could be pushed back given all of the delays as a result of COVID-19.

Thankfully, Morgan is no stranger to filming feature films while also working on The Walking Dead, so there is no need to worry that Morgan is looking for another project or that Negan might be dying in upcoming seasons. (Fans will learn more about Negan’s comic book fate in a special one-shot story coming July 1 called Negan Lives #1)
