The Walking Dead and Samantha Morton were nominated for Critics Choice Super Awards
In what was already an exciting day of news for The Walking Dead fans, The Walking Dead picked up two nominations for the inaugural Critics Choice Super Awards, which will take place on January 10, 2021, on The CW.
Different from the regular Critics Choice Awards, the Critics Choice Super Awards is “a special event honoring the most popular, fan-obsessed genres across both television and movies,” per their website.
The show was nominated for “Best Horror Series,” and will go up against Evil, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Lovecraft Country, The Outsider, and Supernatural for the honor.
On the actor front, Alpha herself, Samantha Morton, will be facing off against Tom Ellis (Lucifer), Abbey Lee (Lovecraft Country), Sarah Paulson (Ratched), Antony Starr (The Boys), and Finn Wittrock (Ratched) for the “Best Villain in a Series” award.
Morton was an absolute star in her time portraying the terrifying leader of the Whisperers, so it’s no surprise to see her earn some recognition for her outstanding performance.
The Walking Dead has had a rough history with awards shows throughout the years. Despite being one of the most-watched shows on television for over a decade, the show rarely wins any major award, with both the show and actors alike being snubbed seemingly every year.
This awards show may be a bit of a different story, however, based on The Walking Dead‘s success at another awards show.
The Saturn Awards are one of the few awards shows that have consistently honored The Walking Dead over the years. The Saturn Awards have more of a niche focus, only covering the worlds of sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, which perhaps is the reason that The Walking Dead is able to win more often.
The brand-new Critics Choice Super Awards are taking a similar approach, as the new show is focusing on “Superhero, Science Fiction/Fantasy, Horror, Action and Animation” content, according to their website.
This presents The Walking Dead with more of an opportunity to win, as the show no longer has to compete against drama shows from across the spectrum of genres like they do for the bigger awards shows, like the Emmys.
Alas, fans must wait until January of next year to find out if the show – and Samantha Morton – manage to take home any hardware. Whether they win or not, the nominations are well-deserved, as The Walking Dead has been producing some of the best episodes in the show’s storied history over the past two seasons.
