Fear The Walking Dead, Survival Rule Of The Week: Things Aren’t What They Seem
By Liam O'Leary
1) Opportunities Come When You Least Expect Them.
This week’s episode of Fear The Walking Dead began with a flashback to how Teddy Maddox was introduced to the zombie apocalypse. He sat in a prison cell in Texas, writing his mantra and looking at a picture of his mother. He watched as a fellow prisoner was taken away to be executed, terrified, despite Teddy’s attempt to encourage him with talk of receiving a “new life.”
Little did Teddy know how right he was…
Later, Teddy’s writing was disturbed by screams, followed by alarms blaring across the prison and all of the cells opening up. Teddy peeked out into the hall to see what was going on and saw the instrument of his freedom: The prisoner who had been executed turned, and killing and turning all the guards assigned to carry out his execution, sowing chaos across the prison.
After killing the walker of one of the guards, Teddy used the confusion caused by the walkers to escape, giving him both a second chance and, in his mind, confirmation that he had been right about the world all along.
I wouldn’t blame you for thinking that a zombie apocalypse wouldn’t be full of opportunities for people who aren’t genuine psychopaths, but when you take a step back, you realize that that would be a mistake in judgment.
Because a zombie apocalypse is so chaotic, there’s no telling what might happen next, but that same chaotic nature means that things can turn around for you quickly. Supplies or places that you wouldn’t have access to normally can suddenly become available because zombies have shown up or because someone turned a whole different set of chaotic things to happen that make things you couldn’t get at before suddenly become reachable.
The larger point here is that you need to keep your eyes and ears open in a zombie apocalypse because, out of the blue, something could happen that gives you a chance to do the most important thing in an apocalypse (Which you might not have had much of a chance at before): Survive.
