While everyone is excited by all The Walking Dead season 11 content, the fandom is also waiting on any news for the Daryl and Carol spin-off, the promised movies and Tales of the Walking Dead anthology series. Comicbook.com is reporting that veteran TWD writer and producer Channing Powell will serve as showrunner for the series.

Powell has been with The Walking Dead since season 4 and started with Fear the Walking Dead in season 6. During this time, she has written or co-written 18 episodes of TWD and 2 for Fear TWD. She has also served as a producer for both series, 96 episodes of The Walking Dead and 16 for Fear the Walking Dead.  Her career started as an assistant on the series White Collar, where she worked her way up to writer and then an executive storyteller.

@TWalkingDWorld grabbed a screenshot of Powell’s IG story that appears to unofficially announce that pre-production of the series has commenced. It is encouraging that a seasoned writer will be the showrunner, at least for now, as her IG bio states, for this series.

Tales of the Walking Dead anthology series

In September 2020, The Walking Dead fandom received many different pieces of news regarding the longevity of the franchise. First, it was announced that the flagship series would end with its eleventh season. That was news that was very difficult to digest. To soften that blow, it was announced that fan favorites Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) would get a spin-off series that will focus on the two remaining Atlanta original characters.

Another spin-off was announced as well, Tales of the Walking Dead. This series would be an anthology of stories that would focus on any of the characters within The Walking Dead Universe. Fans expressed excitement about this series as it would open up the possibility of seeing characters who have been killed off the series.

Our writers at Undead Walking had many thoughts on characters that should be featured. Suggestions were King Ezekiel,  Madison Clark,  a character that creator Scott Gimple has said could be a possibility, and 7 other suggestions for the series.

In the New York Comic-Con video below, moderator Chris Hardwick asks Gimple about the possibility of a story focusing on the plane crash at the beginning of The Walking Dead World Beyond. Gimple stated that yes, this is exactly the type of stories this series will feature.

It is exciting to hear that things are moving forward for Tales of the Walking Dead, as it could be a great series to soothe the fandom once The Walking Dead airs its final episode.

The Walking Dead will return with its eleventh and final season on AMC on August 22. The season premiere episode will be available to stream on AMC+ on August 15.
