The Walking Dead: AMC shares the best moments from 2021
By Renee Hansen
As we enter a new year, it’s always fun to look back on the previous year’s highlights. The Walking Dead universe had many moments worth being considered the best from 2021.
AMC announced that Tales of the Walking Dead would premiere in the summer of 2022. This series will be an anthology series and should be a fantastic addition to TWDU. Fear the Walking Dead was renewed for an eighth season. A premiere date for TWD season 11, part two, has been set for February 20, and the second half of Fear TWD’s seventh season will premiere on April 17.
Many TWDU actors were cast in new projects, which is also very exciting news.
The Walking Dead best of 2021
It seems strange to think that we had episodes of seasons 10 and 11 of The Walking Dead in 2021. Especially since season 10 started in the fall of 2019.
The bonus episodes of season 10 were anthology episodes that focused on a smaller number of characters since these episodes were some of the first filmed during the pandemic. The fandom was divided on opinions regarding these episodes as some felt they were unnecessary, and others were happy to have new episodes of the series.
AMC compiled a list of possible best moments from 2021 in the post below.
These moments impacted the fandom and the characters who experienced them.
Aaron is still heavily affected by his and Gabriel’s meeting of the slightly unhinged Mays. The duo was forced to play Russian Roulette to prove to Mays that there are still good people in the world.
Fans of Negan were thrilled with his stand-alone episode that gave us an origin story of the former leader of the Saviors. The story introduced viewers to his weapon of choice, Lucille’s namesake. It was a heartbreaking story that gave some explanation to how he turned into the villain from earlier seasons.
Many iconic comic characters have been introduced, but there weren’t many that measured up to the introduction of the Commonwealth soldier known as Mercer. Portrayed by actor Michael James Shaw, Mercer has been a highlight of the Commonwealth.
The Commonwealth had a rude welcome for Eugene, Ezekiel, Yumiko and Princess. They were held in boxcars, leading to severe PTSD for Princess, where viewers learned a lot about this new character.
The Reapers, a group talked about since the first bonus episode, made quite an impression with their initial attack. Donning masks and with weapons ready, they appeared in the darkness to attack Maggie and crew. That initial attack showed the skill of this group.
Daryl received a blast from the past when Leah appeared as a member of the Reapers. He was tortured by this group but eventually joined their ranks. At the end of part one of season 11, viewers were left with a cliffhanger after Leah betrayed him.
A group traveled to Hilltop to scavenge for supplies and came upon some remaining Whisperers. When they found evidence that this group had been to Alexandria, Aaron took a very dark turn and used a walker as a weapon on one of the group. Carol, in an outstanding move, not wanting to see Aaron go down a path she has traveled, killed the walker to save the Whisperer.
Viewers have known since the mid-season finale of season 10 that Connie survived. But, her friends and family have been unsure of her fate. The first episode we saw her in season 11 was straight out of a horror flick. She, along with Virgil, took cover in an old house inhabited by some feral’s intent on killing them.
One of the ongoing themes in season 11 has been the tension between Maggie and Negan. They finally came to a truce and teamed up for the greater good.
In the part one finale, Alexandria was hit by a horrible storm and a fire. Rosita took it upon herself to head out into the storm and fight off the horde of walkers that had breached the community’s walls. There has been speculation that she may have been bit during this scene, but the teaser trailer has clips of Rosita, so it’s unlikely.
