The third spin-off of The Walking Dead series, Tales of the Walking Dead, has officially commenced filming in Buford, Georgia. Showrunner Channing Powell posted on Instagram to commemorate the event.

In the summer of 2021, Powell was announced as showrunner for the new spin-off. Since season four, she has been involved with The Walking Dead and began working on Fear the Walking Dead in season six. She has written several episodes and serves as a producer in The Walking Dead universe.

Powell shared a photo of the clapboard, which also tells us that TWDU director Michael Satrazemis and cinematographer Adam Suschitzky, BSC, are also working on this series. The duo has collaborated on other episodes in the fandom, including Fear TWD season six episodes “Honey” and “The Door.” Satrazemis has directed Fear TWD  and The Walking Dead since the fourth season of each series. In addition to his work on Fear TWD, Suschitzky worked on season two of the wildly popular Yellowstone series.

Below is Powell’s post announcing the first day of filming for the new series.

What is Tales of the Walking Dead

The third spin-off of The Walking Dead is titled Tales of the Walking Dead, is episodic anthology series set to feature characters from the flagship series, new and old. The announcement for this series came in 2020 and was officially greenlit in 2021, with a release date of Summer 2022.

AMC announced that Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple was developing this series, and the stories could range from backstories to standalone experiences of a character. The sky is the limit with this synopsis, as we could see the return of fan-favorite characters and learn more about them.

It would be exciting to see some origin stories, similar to The Walking Dead episode “Here’s Negan.” The episodes could look back at what certain characters endured until introduced in the series. How awesome would it be to see more stories about Tyreese and Sasha, the prisoners, Jesus, the beginning of Alexandria, Hilltop and the Kingdom?
