At the 2019 IGN Live at Comic-Con, Walking Dead actors Norman Reedus, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Cailey Fleming. The trio watched their character’s first appearance in the series, and viewers got to see their reactions.

Fleming had only watched season 9 episodes at the time of this interview, so she watched these for the first time. It is adorable when Negan’s (Morgan) first scene gets ready to air, and he tries to cover her eyes, so she doesn’t see how horrible Negan was. Fleming gasps. “Oh, no, he’s gonna kill somebody.” And, she wasn’t wrong.

They started with Daryl Dixon’s first scene from season 1 in episode 3, “Tell it to the Frogs.” Dixon is played by Reedus and has made an enormous transformation since his first appearance on the series. Dixon is one of the many characters not featured in the comics. He is also one of the last two characters from the original Atlanta group. He and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) have survived every season of the series.

In Dixon’s first appearance, he was hunting and tracked a deer that a walker decided to munch on. This didn’t make him happy, and he went total redneck on the deer and yelled one of his one-liners at Dale (Jeffrey DeMunn); he told him to take his hat and go back to On Golden Pond. 

Cailey Fleming – The Walking Dead

Fleming, who portrays an older Judith Grimes in the series, had never seen her character’s very first scene. Judith’s introduction into the world wasn’t a pleasant one if you remember back.  But IGN clipped out the really bad parts to save Fleming from seeing those. She thought it was sweet that her “Aunt Maggie” (Lauren Cohan) was holding her.

Judith has been a presence on the series since season 3, but she never really became a character until Fleming was cast. When asked what she wanted to capture with this character, she responded that she wanted to carry on the legacy of Rick and Carl. Since she was in possession of the iconic hat and gun, she wanted to be sure to use them well.

Who can forget Negan’s first scene? He strolled out of the RV, Lucille shouldered as he taunted the lineup of Rick’s group.

We all know what happens next, but this clip didn’t show everything that happened during the lineup.

They discussed Negan’s transformation since that scene. Morgan shared that on the one hand, it seems like yesterday when they filmed that, but on the other, it feels like a lifetime ago.

He feels Negan has changed since then and has tried to redeem himself.
