The Walking Dead season 11 Carol Peletier at the Commonwealth
By Renee Hansen
As the date draws near for the next episode of The Walking Dead to air, fans speculate what will happen next. One character many are waiting to see is Carol (Melissa McBride). The official trailer shows that she will be one of the many characters to enter the Commonwealth community.
In season 10C, viewers were given a bit of an introduction to the new community known as the Commonwealth. This community is a significant focus in the comics, and fans of those stories were excited to see how they will play out on screen.
An advanced Community that is 50,000 survivors strong, living in several towns, with the main one being located in Ohio. This community is run by Governor Pamela Milton (Laila Robins), whose family was part of the development of the original settlement. Lance Hornsby (Josh Hamilton) will introduce this character in the second episode of season 11B.
The Commonwealth has an advanced military led by an imposing man named Mercer (Michael James Shaw). They serve as military and law enforcement for the community.
Using a caste system, the Commonwealth assigns people to professions similar to those they had before the outbreak. This process sets up a class system where the higher classes professions have a degree of superiority over the jobs classified as a lower tier.
The Walking Dead Carol Peletier
The last we saw of Carol in the finale of season 11A, she was helping to battle the raging storm, fire, and horde of walkers that have come down on Alexandria. She, as always, volunteered to go out into the storm to help where she can.
Her story will pick up during that storm but will eventually see her and many others relocated to the Commonwealth. As the trailer shows, she will get a job at the bakery, the same bakery where Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura) found her brother Tomi (Ian Anthony Dale). This job has raised many eyebrows in the fandom as we all remember when we last saw Carol baking cookies.
Carol is someone who can blend into the background or stand her ground if needed. We have seen before where she puts on her homemaker persona to assess the new community. She did this when she arrived at Alexandria and The Kingdom. King Ezekiel (Khary Payton) was able to see right through her act.
Showrunner Angela Kang told Entertainment Weekly this about Carol and her actions at the Commonwealth:
"Carol definitely has a very particular and specific role to play at the Commonwealth. And anytime Carol is with her cookies, it is a little bit like hiding her true skills, because they all had to do a job that was like something that they did before. And to everybody else, she was just a homemaker and nobody that did any particular job that seemed of any special interest, but we know a lot more about Carol now, obviously."
Viewers know there is much more to Carol than meets the eye. She will do anything in her power to protect those she loves. Her homemaker persona allows her to observe while being ignored as she doesn’t seem a threat. But, fans know the truth, don’t mess with Carol.
It will be an exciting part two of this season as we learn more about this new community and watch our characters acclimate to the new surroundings.
