One year ago, AMC announced that there was a Fear the Walking Dead spinoff in the works. Comicbook.com reports that the spinoff, Dead in the Water, will release in April.

This special will take a closer look at the submarine, the USS Pennsylvania, before the events in season 6 of Fear TWD.  Nick Stahl will return in his role as Riley, who was a weapons officer on the submarine before becoming one of Teddy Maddox’s (John Glover) minions.

The spinoff series will take viewers back to the eve of the outbreak as the Pennsylvania’s crew begins to turn with no explanation. Walkers overrun the sub as Riley, who recently became a father, must figure out how to survive.

Dead in the Water release date – Fear the Walking Dead spinoff

The spinoff series Dead in the Water will release on AMC+ on April 10. This will be ahead of Fear the Walking season 7B premiere on AMC on April 17. The first two episodes of season 7B will be available on AMC+ on April 17, with subsequent episodes airing one week in advance.

Showrunners for Fear TWD, Ian Goldberg and Andrew Chambliss, serve as executive producers for the spinoff with Scott Gimple, chief content officer for The Walking Dead universe. Jacob Pinion, who wrote The Althea Tapes, a six-episode digital tie-in to Fear TWD season 5, wrote the Dead in the Water spinoff.  Pinion also wrote “Damage from the Inside,” from season 6 of Fear TWD.

In an interview last summer, Goldberg told Twitch’s TWDUniverse that this spinoff would tell the backstory of the USS Pennsylvania. This special will reveal the crew’s “really cool” story and other mythology surrounding the sub.

The Walking Dead flagship series will end in 2022, but the universe continues to grow with the announcement of more spinoffs. Tales of the Walking Dead, an anthology series, is currently filming and will premiere in the summer of 2022.

Isle of the Dead, the recently announced Maggie and Negan spinoff, will premiere in 2023, as will the unnamed Carol and Daryl series.
