Colman Domingo set to wrap filming on The Color Purple musical

Colman Domingo is a diverse actor who can transform into any character he sets his mind to. Fans of Fear the Walking Dead love his fantastic portrayal of Victor Strand, a man who is always looking out for number one. But, before he heads back to Savannah to begin filming for the eighth season of Fear TWD, Domingo is finishing up what is sure to be another fantastic production. Domingo will star in the new adaptation of The Color Purple, which has been given a musical treatment that is sure to be a tremendous homage to Alice Walker’s 1982 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and Stephen Speilberg’s 1985 film.
Domingo will play Mister, who Danny Glover originally played. Fellow Walking Dead universe actor Corey Hawkins plays Harpo, Mister’s son, who was originally played by Willard E. Pugh.
Additional casting includes Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, Ciara, Louis Gossett, Jr., David Alan Grier, Aunjanue Ellis, Deon Cole, Elizabeth Marvel and Jon Batiste.
Colman’s wife in the story, Celie, will be portrayed by Fantasia Barrino who, on Wednesday, posted a beautiful photo of the pair gazing at a rainbow. She expressed her excitement about sharing Celie’s story with everyone, a character she had the honor of portraying, and that Domingo covered her even in the hard times. Domingo also shared the photo stating they have five days to go with the encouraging words; we can do it.

The film is directed by Blitz Bazawule, a Ghanaian hip-hop artist who goes by the stage name Blitz the Ambassador and adapted for the screen by Marcus Gardley from the 2005 musical. The source material is Walker’s novel and Spielberg’s film, Spielberg and Quincy Jones returned to produce this new version. Scott Sanders and Oprah Winfrey, who produced the stage musical, have also returned for this film; Winfrey also starred in the original film as Sofia.
The Color Purple Musical film is set to release on December 23, 2022.
