Greg Nicotero is winding down his time working on The Walking Dead series. Over the past 11 seasons, he has directed 39 episodes, which includes the series finale. So, it is time for him to begin working on other projects. Deadline reports that he has teamed up with Jimmy Miller to create a movie about the making of George Romero’s classic Night of the Living Dead.

Nicotero’s Monster Agency Productions and Miller’s Mosaic are partnering to chronicle the cult film that spawned interest in the zombie genre. The original movie had about a $100,000 budget, and the cast and crew consisted of Romero and his friends and co-creators, John Russo and Russell Steiner’s friends and family. Romero directed, photographed and edited the film himself.

Nicotero has always credited his talent to learning from Romero’s films. His first significant job was on Romero’s Day of the Dead. Both are from Pittsburgh, as is Miller, and the trio knew each other well. He first thought of creating the film at a memorial for the late filmmaker.

He has secured the rights and works with Romero’s widow, Suzanne Desrocher-Romero. Nicoetero, Miller, Brian Witten and M. Riley will produce the film.

He will film much of the movie in color to show the creative ways in which they created special effects for the cult classic but will recreate scenes and film them in black and white, staying true to the original film.

Romero was often told he needed to move to Hollywood to make his films, but he stayed true to his roots, crew, and his home in Pittsburgh, making all of his films there. Nicotero and Miller want to celebrate that and the man who gave the horror genre such inspiration.
