Does The Walking Dead universe really need five spin-offs? Maybe not, but fans are willing to give them a chance. Fear the Walking Dead’s seventh season received poor reception, and who knows if it will be able to rally in its eighth and final season. Tales of the Walking Dead’s trailer excited fans, and the Rick and Michonne series will undoubtedly be popular. We don’t know a lot about Daryl’s spinoff, so it’s difficult to get excited about something we know nothing about. But Isle of the Dead, NKA Dead City, featuring Maggie and Negan, is shaping up to be something amazing.

Recently AMC Networks programming chief Dan McDermott talked on Variety’s podcast Strictly Business about Isle of the Dead   Dead City and what fans can expect from this series. The initially released synopsis didn’t give much information, only to say that Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) would travel to Manhattan, which had been cut off from the mainland soon after the outbreak.

In the podcast, McDermott explained that 12 years ago, the government destroyed the bridges and tunnels into Manhattan, giving it up to the walkers. Now, in the current Walking Dead timeline, a walker herd of one million strong has overtaken the island. The small human population is forced to live above the tenth floor and zipline from building to building.

This sounds like a fantastic concept for an apocalyptic series. We still have no clue what will happen to see Maggie and Negan teaming up for this mission.

You can listen to the entire podcast below. McDermott discusses AMC’s Anne Rice series’ developments, Isle of the Dead,  Dead City, the other spinoffs, and AMC’s other projects. And he has a lot of great things to say about The Walking Dead universe.
