Fans of The Walking Dead are coming down from the emotional high the series finale episode, “Rest in Peace,” left them with. Now they are eager to get on with the new stories, but the first new spinoff, The Walking Dead: Dead City, doesn’t release until April 2023. So, it’s time for another binge-watch of the flagship series. This begs the question, will AMC release The Walking Dead’s final season on Netflix before the end of 2022?
Netflix currently has seasons 1-10 of The Walking Dead available to stream. The sad news, the eleventh and final season won’t release on the streamer in 2022. Currently, the only place to view the last season is through AMC’s subscription service AMC+. And with the success of the viewership for the finale on AMC+, the network will likely keep streaming for this season exclusively to its own service for a while.
There is no gauge for the Netflix releases as AMC traditionally releases the previous season one month ahead of the next season’s premiere. Since this is the last season, it is tough to predict when this release will happen.
The Walking Dead – what’s next
The next series to release will be Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), The Walking Dead: Dead City. This will be the first direct spinoff of the flagship series. The duo will travel to the island of Manhattan and, according to the teaser, encounter new friends, foes, and some seriously creepy walkers. Filming for the first season of this series has wrapped, and AMC has announced the release date for April 2023.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon looks to be the next series that will release in the new segment of spinoffs. Currently filming in France, Daryl (Norman Reedus) will somehow find himself, against his will, arriving in France. There he will encounter the French variant walkers and a religious group led by Clémence Poésy’s Isabelle. Adam Nagaitis has been cast as Quinn, a black marketer who has become very influential in the apocalypse. This series is expected to release in 2023.
Production for the Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) series has yet to be announced. It was quite exciting to see this pair included in a coda scene during the series’ final episode.
Fear the Walking Dead, the first spinoff series, is expected to release its eighth season in 2023. Currently filming in Savannah, Georiga, little information has been released for the upcoming season. Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) will return as a series regular, and the mysterious PADRE will be a focus.
