Fans of The Walking Dead universe are excited to see the release of the spinoff series in 2023 that will continue the stories of several prominent cast members. The first to release will be The Walking Dead: Dead City, which will see the strange pairing of Maggie (Lauren Cohan and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as they head to Manhattan. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cohan sheds some light on where Maggie’s mind will be at the beginning of his series.

Maggie’s story concluded nicely at the end of The Walking Dead series, which aired its final episode in November 2022. She was instrumental in the takedown of Pamela Milton (Laila Robins), former governor of the Commonwealth; she rescued her son and was finally situated back at Hilltop as leader. In her final conversation of the series, she told Carol (Melissa McBride) and Daryl (Norman Reedus) that they needed to discuss the future.

Dead City will begin a few years after the one-year time jump experienced in TWD’s final episode. The biggest question is, what transpired during those years to see Maggie go anywhere with Negan? During the last episode of The Walking Dead, Maggie and Negan had a sit-down, and she explained that while she was appreciative of him saving her son, she could never fully forgive him for her husband Glenn’s (Steven Yeun) death.

In the interview with EW, Cohan shared that in Dead City, “We end up picking up in New York at the bottom of a really unexpected mountain.” This will come after several challenges creep up, as they always do in an apocalypse.

She would say that just because one enemy, the Commonwealth, had been neutralized, another will be soon coming. She makes an interesting statement regarding new enemies: “And the enemy is this moving target. It’s also the enemy within.”

Cohan also mentions that Maggie’s greatest weakness will be exploited. The interviewee wonders if this has to do with her son Hershel as she mentions parenting several times in the interview.

Fans have long thought this series will have something to do with Maggie’s son and perhaps Negan’s wife Annie (Medina Senghore) and their child being in danger. Only time will tell what takes this pair to Manhattan.

The Walking Dead: Dead City releases on AMC and AMC+ in April 2023.

UPDATE: 01/10/2023 AMC has announced Dead City will release in June 2023.
