The end of The Walking Dead series was met with great sadness by the majority of the fandom. With that story’s end comes the promise of new stories in the form of several spinoff series. One that fans expect great things from is Summit now known as The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, a series that will see the return of Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes and Danai Gurira as Michonne. Fans long for the return of this apocalyptic power couple.

Production List has the series filming from February 13 through March 16 in Atlanta, Georgia, and Carlstadt, New Jersey. The plan for the spinoffs is to create something new and different from the flagship series. The Walking Dead: Dead City, another spinoff series featuring Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), was filmed primarily in New Jersey. To accomplish a different look and feel do these new series, it only makes sense to move filming to new locations. The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) is set in and filming in France.

The New Jersey Motion Picture & Television Commission has a new filming project on its website. AMC Studios is listed for a project titled Summit that will film in Rutherford, NJ, between February and May 2023. This address is for the Meadowlands Sports Complex in NJ. The complex includes the MetLife Stadium, home of the New York Giants and New York Jets. The complex also consists of the Meadowlands Racetrack and the Quest Diagnostics Training Center, the Giants’ practice facility. It appears viewers could be in for some epic scenes in this series, as the size of these locations could handle something massive.

This location ties into the teaser photos Gurira posted on Instagram of herself, Lincoln, and TWD Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple in what appeared to be a stadium.

The six-episode series wrapped filming in May 2023 and has an expected release date coming in 2024. Fans are very excited to see what’s to come in Rick and Michonne’s story.

UPDATE: At SDCC 2023 the official titled for this series was revealed to be The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live and a first look was revealed.

Walking Dead Rick and Michonne series

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live has been reported as a limited series and may only consist of one season. The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead’s pilot seasons and the other new spinoffs, also contained six episodes for season 1, so time will tell if this series is limited.

One season doesn’t seem to be enough time to see the powerful story of Rick and Michonne played out. Viewers are hopeful that the gaps of the time they spent apart will be filled in and long for the emotional reunion between the characters.

The official logline for The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live series reads:

"Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead… And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive – or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?"

Another big question for this series is whether their children, Judith and RJ, played by Cailey Fleming and Antony Azor, will  Judith and RJ, currently played by Cailey Fleming and Antony Azor, show up in their new story? There has been no announcement about the timeline of the Richonne series, so it is unclear what role, if any, the children will play. Other familiar faces could also appear in this series.

Besides Rick and Michonne there haven’t been a lot of other announcements for other characters involved. Pollyanna McIntosh will reprise her role as Jadis and Lucifer actress Lesley-Ann Brandt as been announced as a character named Pearl Thorne. There have also been rumors that Lost actor Terry O’Quinn will join the series as Major General Beale, but this hasn’t been confirmed by AMC. Other actors who have announced their involvement include Scott McPherson, Frankie Quinones, and Jose Rodriguez.

Fans hope to see more of what Rick and Michonne endured while apart and that fantastic moment when they will be reunited.
