The Walking Dead: Dead City what happened to Negan’s wife Annie?
By Renee Hansen
The Walking Dead: Dead City is the newest spinoff in The Walking Dead universe. This marks the first spinoff to feature characters from the main series in a continuation of their stories. Dead City is set in Manhattan, which has become an apocalyptic wasteland overrun by a horde of walkers over one million strong. This series focuses on fan-favorites Maggie and Negan, which raises the question of what happened to Negan’s wife, Annie.
In the final season of The Walking Dead Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) headed off on his own and, after a time, reappeared with a new group at Riverside. This is also where he announced that he was married to a woman named Annie (Medina Senghore) who was pregnant with his child.
Introduced in season 11, episode 12, “Warlords,” Annie was a leader among her people, one everyone turned to when things went south. Her group made enemies of the Commonwealth and was attacked, and their leader killed.
In the one-year time jump of The Walking Dead series finale, Negan and Annie had removed themselves from the communities but not so far that they couldn’t communicate with them. Annie would have given birth to the child by that time, but no news of Negan’s family was shared.
The Walking Dead: Dead City – Negan and Annie
Dead City takes place approximately two years after the events of the main series finale, and Negan isn’t in his family’s company. When Maggie (Lauren Cohan) finds him, he takes care of a traumatized girl Ginny (Mahina Napoleon), who lost her family. When Maggie asks about Annie and their child, he changes the subject quickly.
Negan is a wanted man for killing some people in New Babylon. The self-described family, Marshal Perlie Armstrong (Gaius Charles), is hunting for Negan to bring him to justice for his crimes. Negan has shared with Maggie that what he has been accused of isn’t the whole story.
Most likely, Annie is the source of the trouble Negan is in. Perhaps she and the child were in harm’s way, or worse, and Negan had to defend his family. It will be interesting to see if Dead City addresses what became of Negan’s family.
The Walking Dead: Dead City will air new episodes weekly on AMC on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET. AMC+ subscribers can watch new episodes three days early on Thursdays.
UPDATE: The Walking Dead: Dead City episode 3, “People Are a Resource” finally shed light on what happened to Negan’s wife and child. You can read it here.
