How is Fear the Walking Dead a prequel to The Walking Dead?
By Renee Hansen
The storyline jumps around at the beginning of The Walking Dead series. Viewers see Rick after he has recuperated from his coma, then we see him before he is shot, then when he is in the hospital, and lots of other jumps fill in the storyline. But the main story begins after the outbreak when Rick awakens from his coma. So, is the spinoff series Fear the Walking Dead considered a prequel to The Walking Dead?
Fear the Walking Dead would mark the first spinoff in The Walking Dead universe. This series would differ greatly from the flagship as its story begins in Los Angeles and starts at the outbreak’s onset. But is it a prequel to the main series?
No, it isn’t. This is a common misconception because of the timeline. In actuality, Fear the Walking Dead is a companion story to The Walking Dead.
Set in the same world, these stories occur during the same outbreak, just at different points. Fear TWD begins right ahead of the outbreak, where The Walking Dead’s story starts when Rick wakes from his coma. It is a great concept as viewers get to see how different parts of the United States handled the outbreak. Many fans are fascinated with the beginning of the apocalypse and enjoy seeing that part of the story.
