Who is Simon, played by Steven Ogg, in The Walking Dead series?
By Renee Hansen
The Walking Dead has had its share of villains throughout the 11-season run. Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is one of the worst, who would eventually do his best to redeem himself. His group, the Saviors, had many crazies, but none compared to Simon (Steven Ogg).
Simon was introduced in season 6 of The Walking Dead. He served as Negan’s right hand for quite some time until he thought he could do the job better. His desperate attempt to become the leader of the Saviors would lead to his death and his becoming one of Negan’s fence walkers.
He was a man who was strategic in his planning and very clever, as seen when he corralled Rick’s (Andrew Lincoln) group by barricading roads, which led to their capture. Simon appeared to follow Negan loyally but was much more willing to kill more people than necessary. This was seen when he destroyed the entire population of Scavengers except for Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh). Simon also orchestrated the massacre at Oceanside, where he killed all males over the age of 10.
The Walking Dead, who is Simon?
When Jadis capture Negan, Simon assumes leadership of the Saviors. In complete disregard of Negan’s wishes to keep Hilltop whole, they set out to destroy the community where numerous Saviors are being held captive. This showed his lack of care even for his fellow Savior’s lives. His attack on Hilltop backfires, and he loses many of his soldiers.
When Negan returns, he humiliates Simon, which sets him off and spurs his plan to overthrow Negan as leader. His state of mind, completely void of his strategic thinking, gets in his way, an he loses to Negan, who then kills him.
Negan allows his former ally to reanimate and chains him to the Sanctuary fence.
