We're coming up on the fourth anniversary of The Walking Dead's series finale. One one hand, that's really hard to believe, but on the other hand, it hasn't felt like it because we've never run out of TWD Universe content. In the years since the show concluded, its original spinoff Fear The Walking Dead aired its final season, while AMC successfully launched the TWD Universe era, incorporating stars of the original show to continue their stories for another run in three new spinoffs.
Daryl Dixon brought Norman Reedus' titular character, alongside his best friend Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride), to France. Dead City saw sworn enemies Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) to New York City. And The Ones Who Live officially wrapped up Rick Grimes and Michonne's love story, bringing Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira back to do that. And separate as those spinoffs might be, fans have hoped that it could all be leading to one major comeback: The original series.
Now, a new update may have reinforced those hopes.
Walking Dead revival series rumored to be on the horizon
According to industry insider The Beyond Reporter, The Walking Dead could return for one more "season", with the revival acting as a reunion for original cast members to tell one more story. The scooper reveals that they heard the AMC series is "expected" to get a new season - or revival series - with the entire main cast returning. They then added that they believe it should be in the form of a miniseries with only one season.
Now, this is a pretty significant update for many reaosns. At the top of that list is the fact that it could potentially suggest that the long-standing rumors about a Walking Dead reunion / crossover series are true. Ever since the original series ended in 2022 and the franchise splintered off into the various spinoffs, there have been hopes that one day it might all come back together to conclude the story in a more satisfactory, definitive way. And this potential spinoff could all it to do just that.

See, while the original series finale's conclusion was generally well-received, it faced criticism for a number of reasons. First and foremost, it lacked significant stakes as it was clear that Daryl, Carol, Maggie, and Negan (as well as Rick and Michonne off-screen) were all going to survive due to their sequel series. Moreover, the spinoffs meant that Rick and Michonne's cameos couldn't be tied to the main story as AMC was planning to tell their story in a separate series - which they eventually did. And as a result of that, all of the pair's friends never got the chance to reunite with Rick and Michonne before the end of the series.
If AMC really is planning to make it happen, it would be a major step forward for the project. Although long-rumored, Walking Dead executive producer Greg Nicotero did confirm earlier this year that they had been "talking about" doing a "reunion-type show" for a number of years now. Nothing had been confirmed and, at least according to the TWD veteran's comments, it was more of a hope for the future than a reality. But it sounds like some things might have changed.
Another recent tidbit that suggests this new rumor carries more weight than you think is the fact that Andrew Lincoln confirmed that there have been discussions about him returning to the franchise as Rick Grimes again in the near-future. The actor essentially wrapped up Rick's story when he and Michonne reunited with kids Judith and RJ in the series finale of The Ones Who Live, so fans were thrilled when they heard that he could be coming back. The question is: What is the return for?
While there is the possibility that Lincoln could cameo in the Daryl Dixon series finale, the much more likely possibility would be that reunion crossover. With Daryl Dixon, Dead City, and The Ones Who Live sending six beloved TWD characters off in separate directions, the logical solution is to bring them back together at some point in time - and considering that Rick's story was essentially finished in his and Michonne's series, the only other option right now would be that potential reunion series.
Needless to say, one last hurrah from the world of The Walking Dead in a crossover series that fans have waited years to see would be a heck of a way for the franchise - or at least this chapter of it - to bow out. If the rumors are true and it does come to fruition, it would mark the first time that we would have a close-to-complete TWD cast since Rick and Michonne's departures in seasons 9 and 10 respectively (so as far back as 2018!). That - and the possibility of giving TWD the grand sendoff it deserves - would make this potential spinoff / sequel series / revival / The Walking Dead season 12 - would make it an absolute must-see.
