The leaves are beginning to change, and the weather is growing crisper. So you know what that means — it’s time to watch zombie movies for Halloween. That’s right: while the world of The Walking Dead may be at a standstill right now, and there’s a great zombie film in theaters with Resident Evil, plenty of great movies are streaming.
From intense action to hilarious comedies, here are the best zombie movies to watch right now.
Train to Busan
I have sung the praises of Train to Busan time and time again because I genuinely think it’s one of the best zombie films of the last decade. Nothing has beaten it, and if you haven’t watched it, you really should.
The movie takes place in South Korea and follows a man as he tries to take his daughter to her mother on a high-speed train. However, as he’s on the train, a sudden zombie apocalypse begins to break out and spread, infecting passengers. It’s now up to him to not only stay alive but also keep his daughter safe.
When I tell you this is the first zombie film that actively made me sob like a baby, I’m not joking. It was the kind of film where, if I had been in theaters with someone when it came out, I fear they would have asked if I was okay afterward. The zombie gore is incredible, and it’s a fantastic South Korean horror movie, but the emotions and story behind it are what truly make it one of the best — if not the best.
You can rent it on YouTube.
28 Days Later
28 Days Later was a revolutionary zombie film — so much so that 28 years later, they released a sequel called 28 Years Later. However, we’re talking about the original.
In this movie, a bicycle courier wakes from a coma only to find that a virus that turns humans aggressive has spread, society has collapsed, and now he must survive.
Does this premise sound a little familiar? Yeah, a bit, but ironically, The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman wasn’t inspired by this opening scene when he wrote Rick’s story, in which he also wakes from a coma. It was just a happy coincidence. Still, it’s a fantastic film, and for fans of The Walking Dead, it’s a zombie movie I believe is a must-watch.
You can currently rent the film on Prime Video.
Zombieland
Zombieland is one of those comedies that you don’t think is going to be that funny until you watch it all the way through and discover that you have tears running down your cheeks from laughing so hard. Directed by Ruben Fleischer, this hilarious film stars Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin as survivors in an apocalypse.
They cross paths as they try to survive in this chaotic landscape and decide to team up when they hear about a sanctuary across the country that happens to be free of zombies. The results? Hilarity.
Let me tell you, if you want a zombie movie that isn’t really scary but is hilarious in every way, then this is the one. It has gory parts, but the film makes up for it with hysterical ways of killing the zombies, killer comedic deliveries, and more. The movie was so iconic that a sequel was released years later.
You can stream Zombieland on HBO Max.
Shaun of the Dead
If you still want another comedy film, then Shaun of the Dead is a great one. Starring Simon Pegg, this hilarious film follows a London salesman caught up in a zombie apocalypse with his friends and family as they try to find safety amid hordes of zombies.
This feels almost like a parody more than a comedy. It uses so many tropes so hilariously, and that's what I think makes this film stand out among so many other zombie movies. And if you end up loving it as much as everyone else has, you’ll be a part of this cult following too.
You can stream Shaun of the Dead on Peacock.
World War Z
Last but not least, we have World War Z. Inspired by the novel of the same name, World War Z stars Brad Pitt as Gerry Lane, a United Nations investigator who travels the world to find a cure for the ongoing zombie apocalypse that turns people into zombies almost instantly.
If you thought the walkers in The Walking Dead were scary? Oh no, think again. The walkers here are on another level of absolutely horrifying and makes the walkers in The Walking Dead look like a cakewalk. You would not survive this world, and neither would I. But you know what we will survive? Watching it on streaming.
You can watch World War Z on Paramount+.
Have fun and keep your doors locked from all the zombies this spooky season!
