Daryl Dixon spinoff actor stars in best medical drama streaming on Netflix
By Renee Hansen
The Resident is a medical drama that originally aired on Fox beginning in 2018 and concluded with its sixth season in 2023. The series stars a newcomer to The Walking Dead universe, Manish Dayal, who portrays Ash in the wildly popular spinoff Daryl Dixon: The Book of Carol.
The series was created by Amy Holden Jones, known for The Slumber Party Massacre, with Hayley Shore and Roshan Sethi. Fox purchased the series from Showtime, and the network ordered a 14-episode season. In March 2024, The Resident was released on Netflix. In its first week, it ranked No. 2 on the streamer with 1.5 billion minutes viewed. The second week after its release, the series jumped to No. 1 with 1.18 billion minutes viewed.
The series follows Dr. Conrad Hawkins, a charming and arrogant doctor who is quite unconventional. Hawkins is portrayed by Matt Czuchry, who is known for his roles in Gillmore Girls and The Good Wife. He enjoys shattering any grandiose illusions of the profession in his first-year residents at the fictional Chastain Park Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. Hawkins' character is offset by Dr. Devon Pravesh, a doctor who follows his moral compass. Pravesh is played by Daryl Dixon - The Book of Carol actor Manish Dayal.
The Resident cast

Many actors appeared in recurring roles, including Violett Beane, Jocko Sims, Moran Atias, Michael Weston, Jenna Dewan, Julianna Guill, Daniella Alonso, David Alan Grier, Rob Yang, and more. The Walking Dead's Ian Anthony Dale (Tomi, in season 11) also had a role in the series' finale season.
The success on Netflix has fans wondering if the series could see a revival. While critical reviews of the series was less than favorable, viewers have another, much more positive, opinion.
In an interview with TV Insider, Dayal was asked if he sees potential regarding a reboot or revival of The Resident.
"You better believe it. I would love it. It would be great for all of us to reunite and come together in a spinoff or something like that. Seeing how The Walking Dead has done it has been very creative. We would love to do it and I’m sure everyone would be down to play together again. It would be a lot of fun. "
- Manish Dayal
Dayal is well known for his role in the 2014 film The Hundred-Foot Journey with Helen Mirren, Om Puri, and Charlotte Le Bon. The dramedy is available to rent or buy on Prime Video. The story follows the Kadam family who move from India to France where they open a restaurant across from the famed Madame Mallory's Michelin-starred eatery.
He has also starred in Viceroy's House, CSI-Miami, Rubicon, Law & Order Criminal Intent, and The Good Wife.
