One of the biggest stars of The Walking Dead has new music coming soon, and it's actually inspired by the hit AMC series.
Emily Kinney, who starred as Beth Greene in the second, third, fourth, and fifth seasons of The Walking Dead, announced in an Instagram post that she will be releasing her cover of Tom Wait's "Hold On" on Aug. 21. That release will be followed by a Beth and The Walking Dead-inspired EP.
Fans have been waiting for this moment for 10 years. Some of the songs Kinney sang for the show were never released in any album or single. However, now the actress is giving the fans what they've always wanted just in time to make her return to the The Walking Dead universe.
"Hold On" will be the first of the few songs released for her new EP. We first hear Emily's version of this song in season 3 episode 11, titled "I Ain't a Judas," when Beth sings it in the prison after Andrea reunites with the group. The group was at a crossroads, preparing for a potential war with the governor. However, Beth's singing provided hope for the group during a time when they needed it the most. The acoustics of that scene were incredible, and the live singing made it feel all the more real.
Kinney also replied to a comment on the same Instagram post revealing that a cover of Jimmy Cliff's "Struggling Man" is also on its way. Beth is first heard singing this song in season 5 episode 9, titled "What Happened and What's Going On," when Tyreese Williams was losing blood and hallucinating due to a bite from a walker. This was a very emotional episode that marked the end of Tyreese's time on the show. Emily's rendition of "Struggling Man" made it all the more meaningful and was a beautiful way to say goodbye to a beloved character.
Music is an important part of any show or movie. It moves an audience and tells a story of its own.
There has been a lot of music introduced throughout The Walking Dead in particular that fans have come to know and love. When we listen to music from the show, it gives us a sense of nostalgia and really immerses us into this apocalyptic world. The Walking Dead has been known for taking pre-existing music and making it their own, transforming music to fit into a unique world and circumstance.
Throughout the years the series has included few musically inclined actors and actresses that have transformed these songs into something of their own. It's great to see one of these stars has decided to bring that nostalgia back and release an EP containing some of their beloved song covers from the show.
For those who don't recall, Beth started the show as a broken girl who had just lost her mother. She didn't have any hope of living in an apocalyptic world where anyone could die at any moment. It wasn't until after she tried "opting out" that she really transformed into a pivotal character in the group.
Beth became a caretaker for Judith Grimes and provided for the group. Her character was a beautiful and hopeful light to others in a world filled with so much dark. She inspired the group with her songs when they were at their lowest. Emily Kinney did an amazing job at taking a song and tailoring it to fit into a broken world. Her voice captivated the audience and immediately made viewers feel immersed.
The character of Beth Greene might be gone, but her music and story continue to live on. It was previously announced that Kinney will be reprising her role as Beth during an episode in season 3 of The Walking Dead: Dead City.
This episode is said to be set in a different universe where the viral wildfire outbreak never occurred. Fans are excited to see their favorite Walking Dead singer back on the screen, reprising a role they have all come to know and love.
