Throughout The Walking Dead universe there have been many different kinds of villains. Some build up their anger and dark side over time, while others show their villainous ways right from the start.

The villains in The Walking Dead: Dead City have been pretty obvious so far. We have witnessed the control of the New Babylon Federation, the evil within the Croat, the manipulation of the Dama, and the gum that refuses to unstick from the bottom of Maggie's shoe, being Negan. All of these threats have been shown to be public enemies from the moment they entered the screen. However, Dead City's streak of obvious enemies has finally ended with the rise of an unexpected villain.

Meet Mason Dillard

When we first meet Mason Dillard in season 3, he spends his time living out the apocalypse in a bar in New York City. He has a great closed-loop vertical food chain that has kept him alive all these years. He takes in the dead and feeds them to maggots, which become food to frogs and so on. This food chain eventually goes all the way up to coyotes. We also learn that Dillard was an NYPD officer that served as an undercover officer during most of his time as a cop. It should have been obvious that Dillard was a smart and dangerous man. However, his isolated lifestyle and relationship with the dead made him seem like a harmless man with a few loose screws.

Dillard spent his days alone in the bar with his zombie friends before meeting Negan. He had walkers tied down to chairs in his bar, having removed their teeth and nails. Every day Dillard talks to the walkers like they are normal people, and he even gives them props. Negan found himself bonding with Dillard, but over time he noticed Dillard's hesitancy to kill certain walkers and his strange attachment to them. To help Dillard, Negan encourages him to kill walkers and change his ways during season 3, episode 3, titled "Emigrants." Unfortunately, the two are distracted from their quest when survivors start flooding the city in need of help.

Two groups that were at war with one another soon fill the hospital, and Renata's group struggles to help, running out of supplies. Dillard gives them some whiskey from the bar to help ease some of the patients' pain. Negan advises Dillard that he would benefit from being around real people more than walkers. As the episodes go by, we see Dillard becoming closer to Renata and the rest of her community. It seemed as though Dillard was becoming more social and stepping away from his strange isolated ways.

However, one day everything changes when Negan kills two of Dillard's walker friends in hopes of making him go away. That drastic decision drove Dillard to become insane. After Negan's actions, Dillard leaves the bar and carves a cut along his face with his own knife. He then goes to the hospital and lies to everyone, telling them Negan did it. Since Dillard used to be a cop and was Negan's friend, he joins forces with Renata to kill Negan. Renata agrees to give Maggie time to talk to Negan before they raid the bar and kill him.

During the wait for Maggie, Renata changes her mind and decides she wants to let Negan live. Dillard becomes angry with her decision, and out of nowhere he shoots her in the chest, killing her. He then knocks out Luis and holds him hostage. A group of ragtag survivors join Dillard as they takeover the community. Dillard then goes back to his bar and pulls his police uniform out of storage.

This came as a surprise to fans. No one expected Dillard to become this dangerous villain. However, the signs were all there: past undercover cop, isolated in a broken world, and his uncanny relationship with walkers. He was used to hiding the real version of himself, and when Negan crossed him, he was done hiding. Dillard’s transformation is a reminder that, in The Walking Dead universe, the most dangerous villains aren’t always the ones who look the part. Sometimes, they’re the ones who have been hiding in plain sight all along.”
