Walking Dead fans all over the world are still enjoying the annual new installments from the franchise. Ever since The Walking Dead itself wrapped its 12-year run in 2022, AMC's TWD Universe has offered up multiple seasons of spinoffs Daryl Dixon and Dead City, along with a standalone Rick and Michonne miniseries in The Ones Who Live. This has allowed the franchise to wrap up some of its long-standing storylines and continue other ones at the same time.
But speaking of TWD endings, Daryl Dixon will conclude later this year with its fourth and final season. The series, which stars Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride back in their iconic roles of Daryl and Carol Peletier, has taken the duo to France, England, and now Spain as they trek across Europe to get back to the US. And now, a new rumor claims that they could encounter a familiar face from their earlier days.
Dwight rumored to appear in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 4
It sounds like Dwight could end up crossing paths with Daryl and Carol again. According to a new rumor from generally reliable account TWDUniverseFR, actor Austin Amelio was reportedly spotted in Madrid back in November, even taking pictures with members of the Daryl Dixon production team when the show was still filming. This has led to fan speculation that he might reprise his role as Dwight in the show. Of course, it's important to point out that this has not been confirmed by AMC or anyone involved in Daryl Dixon season 4, so for the time being it must remain a rumor, but it's certainly an interesting one that is beginning to pick up steam.
Amelio portrayed Dwight in The Walking Dead from season 6 onwards. Negan's right hand man, it is eventually revealed that the villain burned his face with an iron to prevent him from ever leaving with his wife Sherry, who Negan took to be his own bride. Dwight developed a feud with Daryl - which many considered ironic since he was, in many ways, the Daryl stand-in in the comics (Daryl Dixon was an original character created specifically for the AMC show). And it became extremeley sickening, as Dwight tortured the TWD hero in physical and emotional ways, killing his friends and harming him (even after Daryl helped him escape earlier in the series). Eventually, Dwight turned on Negan and set off to find his wife - with Daryl agreeing to let him live on the promise that he never saw him again.

Dwight would resurface in original TWD spinoff Fear The Walking Dead, with Amelio joining the cast from season 5 onwards and remaining with it until season 8. He eventually bonded with Morgan, who remembered him their time fighting Negan and The Saviors. It was here that audiences were finally able to see the potential for good in Dwight - the person he could have been if he hadn't been aligned with Negan for all of those years. And as a result of that, he became an important part of the show's core line-up.
He also reunited with Sherry, with the pair leaving Fear as they made a decision to set off back to the Sanctuary. It was something of a full-circle moment as they were heading back to the place that destroyed their marriage and turned them both into people they didn't want to be. And that could have served as a closing chapter of Dwight's story. It still might.
Could an unlikely Daryl / Dwight reunion really happen?
With all of that in mind, fans are perplexed as to how Dwight could have realistically ended up in Europe to cross paths with Daryl and Carol in Spain. We know the saying "it's a small world" still applies to The Walking Dead Universe - after all, TWD characters met Fear characters on multiple occasions and both respective ensembles reunited with their loved ones after many years apart - but to believe that old enemies in the US could cross each others' paths again years later in Spain in the middle of a zombie apocalypse is a bit of a stretch.

That's not to say that Amelio didn't appear in the season. After all, it's a rumor we're talking about here, so yes is as valid as no at this point; we simply don't know the facts yet. It could also be a situation similar to where Norman Reedus was spotted on the set of The Ones Who Live to simply reunite with his TWD co-stars Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira without ever filming any scenes as Daryl Dixon. If Amelio was in Spain when the final season of the spinoff was filming, perhaps he simply wanted to reunite with Norman Reedus - not bring Dwight back.
Interestingly enough, there has been a relatively long-standing rumor, that originated back in November, claiming that a major character from both the original Walking Dead series and Fear The Walking Dead would appear in the final season of Daryl Dixon. Again, there has been no official confirmation as to whether this would actually happen, but it does narrow it down to Dwight or Morgan - both of whom played major roles on both shows. While Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes also appeared on Fear (along with McBride's Carol), that was more of a cameo appearance than anything else.
We won't know for sure if Dwight will return to the TWD Universe until Daryl Dixon season 4 airs. The good news is that AMC has confirmed that the final season will debut at some point in 2026, meaning that its annual September release window is looking pretty likely right about now.
