For a project that has spent years drifting through development limbo, I Am Legend 2 has finally taken one of its biggest creative steps forward. The long-gestating sequel to the 2007 post-apocalyptic hit has officially locked in a director! This signals that the project is no longer just a concept stuck in Hollywood limbo, but something actively moving toward production.
The film, which brings back Will Smith as Dr. Robert Neville and pairs him with fellow Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan in a new lead role, has been one of the most closely watched sequel developments in recent years. For a long time, fans weren’t even sure if it would happen at all. Now, with a director attached, the sequel is finally gaining real momentum.
So, who's taking the helm of I Am Legend 2? According to Collider, the answer is Steven Caple Jr. The news outlet got the opportunity to speak with Caple at a recent press junket for Netflix’s upcoming Man on Fire series, where the director confirmed that he is officially developing I Am Legend 2 for Warner Bros. For those who aren't aware, Caple is best known for directing Creed II and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. With him now confirmed to be helming I Am Legend 2, this reunites him with Jordan, who starred in the lead role in Creed II.
From standalone hit to long-developing sequel
When I Am Legend was released in 2007, it was all people could talk about. Directed by Francis Lawrence, the film followed Dr. Robert Neville as he navigates an abandoned New York City after a virus wipes out most of humanity and transforms survivors into hostile infected creatures known as Darkseekers.
The film was a massive box office success and quickly became a modern staple of the post-apocalyptic genre. In fact, there were even talks of a prequel with Lawrence potentially returning as director, D.B. Weiss writing the script, and Smith reprising his role as Neville. However, that early version of the idea never made it past development discussions, and what followed was a long, complicated road.
But then everything changed in March 2022 when Warner Bros. officially announced that a sequel was finally in active development. Smith was once again announced as returning to his role as Neville, but this time with Jordan joining as his co-star. It was also revealed at the time that Smith and Jordan would be signed on as producers. In addition, Akiva Goldsman, who penned the script for the first movie, would return to write the sequel's screenplay and produce it as well.
We would then learn later that I Am Legend 2 would not be a continuation of the original film's ending that was shown in theaters, but instead would follow the alternate ending that was released on home media. In that version, Neville survives and comes to a far more unsettling realization. It's that the infected Darkseekers are not simply mindless monsters, but intelligent beings capable of communication, emotion, and social structure.
Sadly, plot details for the sequel remain under wraps. However, Smith has hinted in a past interview at who Jordan will be playing in the second film and how his character fits into the wider world of the story. While a guest on REVOLT's Drink Champs podcast back in April 2025, Smith shared that Jordan will be portraying another survivor in I Am Legend 2. Specifically, he described Jordan's character as the "head of a new settlement in Connecticut."
The last thing we heard about the sequel's scriptwriting process was that Goldsman had written a second draft. However, that was back in July 2024. Could things have changed since then? In short, yes.
Film development almost always continues to evolve beyond any single draft. Even after a second draft is completed, scripts typically go through multiple revisions as new ideas are introduced, studio feedback comes in, and casting decisions influence character direction. Given the scale of I Am Legend 2 and the fact that it has taken years to properly take shape, it’s entirely possible that elements of the story have been refined or expanded since that update.
But for now, this is all we know about the sequel so far. Now that an official director is attached, we're keeping our fingers crossed that more concrete updates about I Am Legend 2 will start arriving soon!
