Colman Domingo, John Legend, and more Q&A at opening weekend for Sing Sing in L.A.
By Renee Hansen
Emmy Award-winning Colman Domingo has been extremely busy with many new projects. In 2023, he said goodbye to Victor Strand, a role he portrayed in AMC's Fear the Walking Dead throughout its eight-season run. Next, he will star in the new film Sing Sing, which premiered in the Special Presentations program at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.
Sing Sing is directed by Greg Kwedar (Transpecos), who co-wrote the film with Clint Bentley (Jockey). The movie is based on the Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) program featured at Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison. Kwedar came up with the idea for the film after volunteering for the RTA program at Green Haven Correctional Facility, where Bentley also volunteered as a teaching artist. The RTA is a program that transforms the lives of incarcerated individuals by allowing them to use their time productively, fostering personal growth, and encouraging community building. Statistics released by Sing Sing state that less than 3% of prisoners participating in RTA return to prison.
The movie follows Divine G, a man incarcerated for a crime he didn't commit. While in prison, he becomes involved in RTA, where he and his fellow inmates attempt to stage Breakin' the Mummy's Code, an original production created by the program's members.

The movie is reported to be an accurate representation of the program and the impact it has on the lives of its members. If you would like to support the RTA programs, tax-deductible donations can be made at the RTA website.
