The second spinoff in The Walking Dead universe, World Beyond, premiered in 2021. This limited two-season series was a coming-of-age story that followed the first generation to grow up in the apocalypse. This series would also feature the first detailed information regarding the superpower known as the Civic Republic Military (CRM), the military leg of the Civic Republic, a mysterious, highly advanced civilization.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live will premiere on February 25 and is the sixth spinoff of TWD, which features the return of fan favorites Rick and Michonne, portrayed by Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira. This series is a continuation of their touching love story, which began in the main series.

In season 9, the couple would be parted as Rick, in a heroic sacrificial move, blows up a bridge to keep his family safe. While his family believes he died during the explosion, Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) saves him to save herself, and they both become involved in the inner workings of the CRM. Jadis is a high-ranking warrant officer, and Rick is a captive working in the culling facilities.

What is the Civic Republic?

The CR is The Walking Dead's largest community, boasting over 250,000 residents in the central location with a highly organized military known as the CRM. When introduced in World Beyond, the organization comprised three major cities, Portland, Oregon, Omaha, Nebraska, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where Jadis and Rick end up. This made up the Alliance of the Three, signified by the tell-tale three interlocking circles featured on the helicopters and military vehicles seen in several Walking Dead series.

In World Beyond, Major General Beale, who will be portrayed by Terry O'Quinn in The Ones Who Live, ordered the destruction of Omaha and its offshoot, Campus Colony, located in Lincoln, NE, with chlorine gas. This eliminated close to 100,000 people.

The CRM operates independent of the CR

World Beyond reveals that while the CR is the main headquarters of the community, the military branch works in secrecy, conducting experiments and research unknown to the powers that be of the CR. They utilized humans and the undead for the experiments as they search for a cure or at least a way to slow down the virus.

The CRM created a chemical weapon

In World Beyond, it is shown that the CRM created a chlorine gas, the same used to destroy Omaha and Campus Colony. This is a weapon that will also be used in The Ones Who Live, as showcased in a scene in the trailer involving MIchonne, Nat (Matthew Jeffers), Bailey (Andrew Bachelor), and Aiden (Breeda Wool).

Major General Beale is the leader of the CRM

Although never seen in World Beyond, Major General Beale ordered the destruction of Omaha and Campus Colny in that series. He is shown to be ruthless and expects his orders to be carried out without question. In the trailer for TOWL, he is seen talking with Rick and asks him why he is here (at the CR) as if he has a choice. But it is obvious he is a captive as the CRM recaptured him during the coda scene of The Walking Dead series finale.

The Ones Who Live will finally show the enormity of the reach of the CRM and the significant threat this organization can pose to those who oppose it or become a strain on their resources.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live will premiere on AMC and AMC+ on Sunday, Februrary 25.
