How many seasons does every series in The Walking Dead universe have?
By Renee Hansen
The Walking Dead universe began in 2003 with the comic created by Robert Kirkman. By 2010, the first series would premiere, and now, fourteen years later, the universe includes the comic, flagship series, and its six spinoffs, with more to come. How many seasons does each series within TWDU have?
The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead began on October 31, 2010, and ran through November 20, 2022. The series featured 11 seasons, with season 10 featuring a bonus segment of episodes and the mega-sized eleventh and final consisting of 24 episodes. The series concluded satisfactorily, closing out many characters' stories while leaving others open to be explored in new spinoffs.
Fear the Walking Dead
The first spinoff premiered on August 23, 2015, airing until November 19, 2023. Fear the Walking Dead featured eight seasons and was the first series to feature crossover characters. Three characters, Morgan Jones (Lennie James), Dwight (Austin Amelio), and his wife Sherry (Christine Evanglista), initially established in the main series, would see their stories cross into new territory. Many fans would love to see some of the characters from this series featured in their own show, but at this time, nothing has been announced by AMC.
The Walking Dead: World Beyond
The third series is a limited-two-season coming-of-age series that began airing on October 4, 2020, with its final episode airing on December 5, 2021. The Walking Dead: World Beyond was a unique series in that the main characters are some of the first kids to grow up after the outbreak. They lived their entire lives protected from the outside world behind a walled community. They were required to learn how to defend themselves and survive outside those walls on their own. This series also gave the first look into the Civic Republic Military (CRM), an organization mentioned in some of the other series. Some of the themes from this series will carry to The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live.
Tales of the Walking Dead
Tales of the Walking Dead is an episodic anthology series that currently only has one season. There have been talks of more seasons to come, but nothing has been officially announced. This series, set in the same TWDU, features a new story for each of its six episodes and introduces new characters. The episodes are also set in different areas of the United States at different times after the outbreak, including one that is set 30 years into the future. One episode told the back story of a character from the main series, Alpha (Samantha Morton). This episode takes place before her reign of terror at the leader of The Whisperers.
The Walking Dead: Dead City
The fourth spinoff, Dead City, aired its first season in 2023 and has been renewed for a second that will likely premiere in 2025. This is the first series set after the events of the main series featuring two familiar faces, Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan) and Negan Smith (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). The majority of the story is set in apocolyptic Manhattan, which is a fantastic change from the wooden setting of TWD. The first season saw the long-time enemies come together to rescue Maggie's son Hershel (Logan Kim), only to have Maggie betray Negan, who by the end of the season was in the hands of some ruthless people.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon also takes place after the main series final episode and sees the titular character arrive on the shores of France. The series currently has one season, with a second premiering in 2024. Although he is in France unwillingly, he meets a group of people who need his assistance, so he sets aside his mission to return home so that he can help them. The second season will see Melissa McBride join Norman Reedus in the season subtitled The Book of Carol.
The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live
The Ones Who Live will premiere on AMC and AMC+ on February 25, 2024. The six-episode series will see the return of Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira as Rick Grimes and Michonne. There have been mixed reports as to whether this series, which replaces the previously announced trilogy of films, will only have one season or not. Events in this series will chronicle what has transpired with these characters since their departure from the main series.
