AMC and AMC+ will premiere The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live on February 25, 2024. This marks the sixth spinoff of the main series and focuses on Rick and Michonne. The fandom has longed for the return of these iconic characters to learn what has transpired since they departed from the series. The premiere date of this series falls on a significant date in the lives of these characters.

On February 25, 2018, six years prior to The Ones Who Live premiere, AMC aired a crucial episode in The Walking Dead series. The midseason premiere of season 8, "Honor," featured the death of Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne's (Danai Gurira) son, Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs). In a shocking move, the series would take a massive digression from the comic story and kill off Carl, who in the comics survives to the end.

The episode was written by TWDU veterans Matt Negrete & Channing Powell and directed by EP and SPX master Greg Nicotero. "Honor" is one of the many divisive episodes of the series, as many fans believe this was the beginning of the end for the series.

The Walking Dead - Carl Grimes

Chandler Riggs was cast as Carl when he was 10 years old. He would play the character until he was 18 and earned a spot in many viewers' hearts as they watched him grow up on the series. Love or hate the character, his death episode was outstanding, and his death impacted many other characters, including Rick, Michonne, and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

The midseason finale of season 8 revealed that Carl had been bitten while he was helping Siddiq (Avi Nash) escape into the sewers of Alexandria. The bite was located on his abdomen, and his fate was clear.

In his final episode, Carl played with his sister Judith and passed down their father's hat, just as it was passed to him. He tells Michonne that she is his best friend, tells his dad he loves him, and in a final selfless gesture, takes his own life so his parents are spared this trauma.

The Ones Who Live will continue the story of Rick and Michonne, parents to Carl, Judith (Cailey Fleming), and R.J. (Antony Azur). Will the couple ever be reunited with their two remaining children? Only time will tell.

Don't miss The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live when it premieres on AMC and AMC+ on February 25, 2024.
