Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live pits Rick against an apocolyptic superpower, the CRM
By Renee Hansen
Actor Andrew Lincoln has portrayed Rick Grimes since the debut of The Walking Dead in 2010. He was the first character to be featured in the new series based on the comic story created by Robert Kirkman. Many viewers didn't know what to expect in the new "zombie" series but quickly found that Rick Grimes wasn't a man to mess with and The Walking Dead was no ordinary series.
Throughout the nine seasons Rick was featured in the main series, he took charge of a group of survivors and led them as best he could in the world overrun by the undead. As a former Sheriff Deputy, he had the survival, weaponry, and combat skills to be a survivor, but he also surrounded himself with people who possessed skills useful in an apocalypse.
Rick and his group would quickly discover that the undead weren't the worst of their problems in the world after the outbreak, but the humans who survived were, in fact, much more dangerous. He would encounter The Governor (David Morrissey) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), two of the worst villains he came up against, and win in the end. Seeing him come against Alpha (Samantha Morton) and the Whisperers would have been fascinating.
In season 9, Rick sacrificed himself to save his family and community. He was rescued by Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) in a selfish move on her part to save herself. Regardless of her motives, Rick survived and will star in the upcoming The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, where he will encounter his most significant challenge to date.
The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live - Civic Republic Military
The Civic Republic is a highly advanced community, the largest known since the outbreak, whose central hub is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The community comprises over 200,000 residents and an advanced military known as the Civic Republic Military or CRM.
"We have energy, water, medicine, transport, the Council, the courts, the schools, culture, currency, an economy, agriculture, manufacturing, law. We are the last light of the world. We are the last hope. And we, us... we enable this population of over 200,000 souls to live... to create the future."
- Elizabeeth Kublek - TWD: World Beyond
The CRM saved Rick and Jadis in the helicopter during their final appearance in the main series. It has been years since Rick has been seen, and during The Walking Dead's series finale in November 2022, Rick and Michonne were featured for the first time since their departures from the series in seasons 9 and 10. These scenes reveal Rick has tried to escape at least once, only to be recaptured, and Michonne has continued her search for Rick.
The Ones Who Live will finally reveal the enormity and massive power of the CRM, which is a part of the Civic Republic but works independently. This was seen in the World Beyond spinoff when the CRM conducted experiments on humans and the undead, and Major General Beale (Terry O'Quinn), leader of the CRM, ordered the destruction of Omaha and its Campus Colony using chlorine gas.
Rick will come against his greatest obsticle since the outbreak, the CRM, but he is a fighter who has purpose. Will this give him enough strength to come against Beale, his soldiers, and massive resources at his disposal?
The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live premieres on AMC and AMC+ on February 25.
