In November 2023, Netflix released the biopic Rustin starring Fear the Walking Dead actor Colman Domingo. He is well known for his role as Victor Strand in the apocalyptic spinoff, as well as many other iconic roles. In Rustin, Domingo portrays Bayard Rustin, a man who, although he made a huge impact in the organization of the 1963 March on Washington, never received the recognition he deserves until now.
Rustin is a wonderful movie to watch in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which is also fittingly Civil Rights Day. Produced by Barack and Michelle Obama's Higher Grounds production company, Rustin is directed by Tony Award-winning George C. Wolfe. The story was written by Julian Breece, who co-wrote the screenplay with Dustin Lance Black.
The movie chronicles the organization of the March on Washington, which significantly affected civil rights legislation pending in Congress. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was the final speaker of the day who delivered his historic "I Have a Dream" speech, calling for an end to racism and racial segregation.
Domingo is joined by an ensemble cast that includes Chris Rock, Glynn Turman, Aml Ameen, Gus Halper, CCH Pounder, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Johnny Ramey, Michael Potts, Jeffrey Wright, and Audra McDonald. The movie has been met with favorable reviews and has received numerous accolades.
Rustin marks a milestone in Domingo's career as his first leading role. This is difficult to believe due to his memorable performances in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Fear the Walking Dead, and Euphoria, for which he won an Emmy. In 2023, he also gave another outstanding performance in the musical adaptation of The Color Purple, where he portrayed Mister.
