Actor Scott Wilson is a fixture within The Walking Dead universe. He was introduced as Hershel Greene in season 2 of the series, and before his on-screen death in season 4, he made a significant impact on those he met, including Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln). Many years before starring in the wildly popular apocolyptic series, Wilson starred in The Great Gatsby movie released in 1974, currently streaming on Netflix.
The Great Gatsby is based on the same named novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald from 1925. British film director Jack Clayton helmed the project produced by David Merrick and written by Francis Ford Coppola. This film was predated by 1926 and 1949 films, followed by the 2013 version starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
The 1974 film stars Robert Redford, Mia Farrow, Sam Waterston, Bruce Dern, and Karen Black, who played Myrtle, wife of Scott Wilson's George Wilson.
Set during the riotous Jazz Age on Long Island, the story follows interactions of writer Nick Carraway (Waterson) and millionaire Jay Gatsby, played by Robert Redford, in a role initially offered to Warren Beatty and Jack Nicholson. Gatsby hosts lavish parties and is fueled by his obsession with reuniting with his former lover, Daisy Buchanan, portrayed by Mia Farrow.
The film was praised for faithfulness to the source material but criticized for its lack of emotions towards the Jazz Age. The film won two Academy Awards, one for Best Costume and the second for Best Original Score. It would also win three BAFTA's for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Costume Design.
Karen Black won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress, and Bruce Dern was nominated for Best Supporting Actor along with Sam Waterson, who was also nominated for Most Promising Newcomer.
