1. Glenn’s fake-out death (season 6 dumpster scene)

In the episode, Glenn and Nicholas become trapped on top of a dumpster as walkers swarm beneath them. The swarm of walkers tearing into flesh all strongly suggested that Glenn had been killed in one of the most sudden and brutal ways imaginable. So when the episode ended without fully clarifying his fate, viewers were left in an uncomfortable limbo that felt almost cruel in its execution. Instead of resolving the moment, the show deliberately withheld confirmation for several episodes.
It cut away from Glenn’s storyline entirely while continuing other plotlines as if nothing had happened. That decision intensified fan frustration because it forced the audience to sit with grief and uncertainty without closure. When it was finally revealed that Glenn had survived by crawling under the dumpster while the walkers fed on Nicholas instead, the reaction was deeply divided.
On one side, fans were relieved that a beloved character had been spared. On the other, many felt the emotional manipulation had gone too far. 2. The infamous Negan cliffhanger (season 6)
Few moments in The Walking Dead history caused as much immediate outrage, confusion, and online chaos as the season 6 finale cliffhanger introducing Negan. After building toward his arrival for an entire season, the episode finally delivered his debut in the most agonizing way possible only to end before revealing which member of Rick’s group he had brutally killed. The final scene showed Negan lining up the group, delivering his chilling “Eeny, meeny, miny, moe” selection, raising Lucille, and then cutting to black right as the fatal blow landed.
The decision to end the season at that exact moment instantly became one of the most controversial creative choices the series ever made. On one hand, it successfully built massive suspense. On the other, it left viewers feeling deliberately manipulated. They were forced to sit with a cliffhanger that offered no resolution for months.

If the dumpster fake-out tested fans’ patience, Glenn’s actual death broke it. In the season 7 premiere, Negan follows through on his threat from the previous finale and not only brutally kills Abraham but Glenn as well in front of Rick’s group using Lucille.
What made this moment especially devastating wasn't just the violence itself, but the emotional weight behind it. Glenn had been part of the series since the very beginning. He represented one of its most hopeful and compassionate characters. So to see him go out in such a savage and utterly helpless manner was incredibly hard to watch.
The scene itself was intentionally prolonged and unflinching. The camera never looked away as Negan’s attack unfolded, forcing both the characters and the audience to endure every second of it. By the time Glenn’s final words to Maggie were spoken, many viewers were already emotionally overwhelmed.

4. Carl’s death (season 8)
Carl Grimes’ death remains one of the most controversial decisions in The Walking Dead’s entire history. In the comics, Carl survives and becomes a central figure in humanity’s future. On television, however, his journey ends unexpectedly after he is bitten by a walker while helping a stranger outside Alexandria. He ultimately meets his demise in the ninth episode of the eighth season.
What makes this moment so shocking is how much it changes the long-term vision of the story. Carl was meant to represent the next generation. You know, the bridge between the old world and whatever comes after. While the extended farewell between Carl, Rick, and Michonne added emotional depth, many fans feel that it didn't offset the larger issue.
