Actor Corey Hawkins will star in the Netflix original film The Piano Lesson, which will be released on Nov. 22. He has also been recently announced for the Amazon MGM Studios thriller Crime 101. Deadline reports Hawkins has also joined the season 2 cast of Poker Face.
Hawkins has been announced, with Awkwafina (The Farewell), Simon Rex (Red Rocket), and Cliff "Method Man" Smith (Power Book II: Ghost) all in guest-starring roles for the second season of the series. This group joins previously announced guest stars Giancarlo Esposito, Katie Holmes, Gaby Hoffmann, Kumail Nanjiani, Sherry Cola, Kevin Corrigan, Ben Marshall, Kathrine Narducci, Cynthia Erivo, BJ Novak, Margo Martindale, John Mulaney, Ego Nwodim and Sam Richardson.
Created, written, and directed by EP Rian Johnson, Poker Face is a murder mystery series that follows Charlie, played by Natasha Lyonne, a woman with the uncanny talent of knowing when a person is telling lies. Charlie is a former casino worker on the run from her boss after a mysterious death. Along her travels, she solves homicides in different settings where she encounters many interesting people. The episodes are reminiscent of Columbo's inverted detective stories, where viewers are given information about the crime up front while they follow along as the main character solves it.
The debut season of Poker Face ranks 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and has received critical acclaim. The series has been nominated and won several awards, and Lyonne was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards.
The first 10-part season of Poker Face premiered in Jan. 2023 and is available to stream on Peacock. The series was renewed for a second in Feb. 2023. Lyonne directed one episode of season 1 and is reported to direct at least one episode in the upcoming season.
Emmy and two-time Tony award nominee Hawkins will next be seen in the Netflix original The Piano Lesson. The film also stars Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu, Skylar Aleece Smith, and Danielle Deadwyler. The story is set in the years following the Great Depression and focuses on the Charles family, whose prized possession is a piano with carvings made by an enslaved ancestor. The movie premieres on Netflix on Nov. 22 and is based on August Wilson's 1987 play.
Other recent roles for Hawkins include the vampire thriller The Last Voyage of the Demeter and the musical adaptation of The Color Purple. He is also well known for his roles in In the Heights, 6 Underground, BlacKkKLansman, Kong: Skull Island, and Straight Outta Compton.
