Walking Dead alum Corey Hawkins cast in the thriller Crime 101
By Renee Hansen
Emmy and two-time Tony award nominee actor Corey Hawkins has landed his next role in a crime movie, Crime 101, for Amazon MGM Studios. He is well known for his roles as Heath in The Walking Dead, Dr. Dre in Straight Outta Compton, and Houston Brooks in Kong: Skull Island.
Deadline announced that Hawkins has been added to the previously announced cast of Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan, Halle Berry, and Monica Barbaro. No details regarding Hawkins' or the other roles have been released.
Director Bart Layton has adapted Don Winslow's bestselling psychological thriller of the same title to create the new movie. While details of the movie plot have been kept under wraps, the novella follows Davis, a jewel thief who plans a Pacific Coast Highway diamond heist, which he hopes is his last. This leads to a cat-and-mouse game with Los Angeles Police Department detective Lou Lubesnick.
Hawkins also stars in a new thriller, The Man in My Basement, with Willem Defoe and Anna Diop. The film is Nadia Latif's feature directorial debut, based on Walter Mosley's novel. Hawkins portrays Charles Blakey, a man living in the African American neighborhood of Sag Harbor. He is out of work, out of luck, and on the verge of forclosure on his family home.
In November 2024, Hawkins will appear in The Piano Lesson with Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu, Skylar Aleece Smith, and Danielle Deadwyler. This movie is based on the 1987 play by August Wilson that follows the Charles family in the aftermath of the Great Depression whose prized possession is the family piano which features designs carved by an enslaved ancestor. The movie premieres in theaters on Nov. 8 and on Netflix on Nov. 22.
Additionally, Hawkins recently starred in The Last Voyage of the Demeter, a story based on one chapter of Bram Stoker's Dracula. He also starred with fellow Walking Dead universe actor Colman Domingo in the musical adaptation of The Color Purple.
He received his second Tony nomination for his Broadway performance in Top Dog/Underdog. His first Tony nomination was received for his performance in the 2017 Broadway production of Six Degrees of Separation.
Hawkins is well remembered for his role as Heath in The Walking Dead. Although he didn't have a lot of screentime, his character vanished without a trace. Add to that, he wasn't even mentioned again. Showrunner Angela Kang confirmed that Heath was traded to the CRM (Civic Republic Military) by Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh). Fans were excited to think he could be seen again in The World Beyond or The Ones Who Live spinoffs, which heavily featured the CRM, but this never happened.
