Maggie Rhee, née Greene, is a character introduced in season 2 of The Walking Dead, portrayed by actress Lauren Cohan. Although she suffered significant losses throughout the show's eleven seasons, she came out a survivor. Her story continues in the spinoff The Walking Dead: Dead City.

When AMC first announced a spinoff featuring the continued stories of Maggie and Negan, viewers were unsure how this would work. The premiere episode of Dead City began with a focus on Maggie and her search for her long-time enemy, Negan Smith (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). It would soon be revealed that her son Hershel (Logan Kim) had been abducted by one of Negan's former Saviors, The Croat (Željko Ivanek), and she needed Negan's assistance in the rescue.

As the story continued, viewers learned that Maggie had made plans to betray Negan by trading him for the release of her son. This put him in the hands of the Croat and an even worse villain, The Dama (Lisa Emery), a ruthless and powerful woman.

When season 2 began, Negan had been a captive of the Dama for about a year, but still refused to do her bidding. But when his family is threatened, Negan goes along with her plan to overtake Manhattan. She has another unexpected ally in Hershel, the boy she not only held captive, but also chopped off his pinky toe to use as proof to Negan that she means business.

In a recent Behind the Dead video, which looks BTS at TWD spinoffs, Emery made a comment that has fans of Maggie's concerned. She states that in the upcoming third season, "Maybe I'll have to kill Maggie." Now that would be a shock to the fandom.

In season 2, viewers learn that while Hershel was being held by the Dama, she catered to his need to be seen and understood, something his mother had failed to do. He becomes fixated with the woman and ultimately betrays his mother. This eventually leads to Hershel siding with the Dama.

Emery does add that she doesn't believe the creators would allow Maggie's death, as she is their hero. And she's probably correct. However, that doesn't mean things won't heat up between the woman in Season 3, as by the end of the previous season, the Dama, with Hershel at her side, still has her sights on Manhattan.

Maggie, Negan, and Perlie Armstrong (Giaus Charles) are prepared to work together to make a better world. One not of the Dama or New Babylon's making. Together, they will be powerful, but will it be enough to take down what remains of the gangs in New York?

Even though the trio has vowed to work together, Scott M. Gimple has stated, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, that "It’s not necessarily sunshine and rainbows."

In July 2025, AMC announced that The Walking Dead: Dead City had been renewed for a third season. Eli Jorné will step down as showrunner, a position taken over by TWD veteran Seth Hoffman. Filming for the season will take place in Boston and begin in the fall of 2025.

The synopsis for Dead City season 3 teases that “Maggie and Negan finally put aside their differences to build the first thriving community in Manhattan since the apocalypse, but when chaos in the city begins to arise, they are forced to question: have they learned from their old wounds or will their dark past spell doom for the entire city?”

It seems unlikely Dama will get her wish, but stranger things have happened and there's no telling where season 3 will take us!
