Samantha Morton lands lead role in Love And War

Love And War is reportedly targeting a pre-production timeline around August 2026. The film will be directed by Lisa Mulcahy, known for Lies We Tell, who also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Elisabeth Gooch. In addition, the project is produced by Michael Garland, whose previous credits include Death of a Superhero. Alliance Media Partners (AMP) is rolling out the film’s international sales rights ahead of the Cannes market taking place next month.

Love and War tells the story of a woman named Sarah whose young daughter is taken across international borders by her estranged husband and brought into war-torn Syria. With limited legal options and time rapidly running out, Sarah makes the life-altering decision to travel into the conflict zone herself to bring her child home.

Once inside Syria, she is confronted with an unpredictable and dangerous environment. She finds herself having to navigate shifting alliances, political barriers, and constant physical threats, all while racing against time to find her daughter before it is too late.

As mentioned earlier, Morton takes center stage in the film. She plays Sarah, the desperate mother. Horror fans will recognize Morton for her memorable portrayal of Alpha/Dee in The Walking Dead, the ruthless leader of the Whisperers. Her performance as Alpha became one of the most talked-about villain roles in the later seasons of the AMC series, with the character standing out for her cold ideology, disturbing leadership style, and brutal survival tactics.

Outside of The Walking Dead, Morton is also a two-time Academy Award nominee and has built a reputation for emotionally powerful performances across film and television. In Love And War, Morton shifts from playing one of television’s most feared villains to embodying a grounded, human story about survival in the real world.

Below, we shared Morton's statement about her casting in the film via Deadline:

"The film Love And War is an incredible testament to a mother’s love, and to what a mother is capable of doing to save her child despite extraordinary circumstances. I was moved beyond words upon reading.”

While still in early development, Love And War is already shaping up to be a notable addition to the growing slate of international thrillers rooted in real-world conflict. With a strong creative team, a compelling true-story foundation, and a standout casting choice from a beloved television franchise, the film is positioning itself as one to watch as it moves closer to production!
