In 2022, Prime Video ordered a God of War series adaptation. Since then, video game fans have been doing everything they can to stay in the loop. The biggest news about the adaptation came in January 2026, when it was revealed that a familiar face from The Walking Dead had officially signed on. The talented actor would be taking on one of the most physically and emotionally demanding roles in contemporary entertainment.
Ryan Hurst, who Walking Dead fans will remember portraying the role of Beta, had been cast as Kratos. The casting announcement instantly sparked excitement and curiosity. Kratos is a character defined not just by his immense strength, but by the weight of his past, his struggles with rage, and the delicate, evolving bond he shares with his son. Translating all of that into live action would be no small task, and fans have been eager to see whether the actor can rise to the challenge.
Since Hurst's casting, more and more actors have been joining the project. Yet, until now, fans had only glimpsed names and announcements. There hadn't been any concrete visual proof of how the series would look or how the characters would be realized on screen.
That's all changed now. Today, Prime Video and Sony Pictures Television have released the first-look image from the upcoming series, giving fans their first tangible glimpse of Hurst fully transformed as Kratos, alongside Callum Vinson as Atreus. We shared the official production still right below!

Fans of the beloved video game series will be thrilled by what they see. Hurst fully embodies Kratos, from the battle-worn armor to the intensity in his expression. Atreus, on the other hand, stands confidently beside his father, ready to show him his archery skills. With just this one image, fans can finally see the iconic father-son duo from the games brought to life exactly as imagined. Now, the excitement to see their journey unfold on screen has reached a fever pitch!
Ronald D. Moore serves as the showrunner, executive producer, and writer for the God of War series. In addition, Frederick E.O. Toye is set to direct the first two episodes. Along with releasing the first image, Prime Video also announced that the cameras have officially started rolling. However, it's unknown how long production will last. There isn't a release date, either.
What we do know is that the show has already been given a two-season order, meaning Prime Video is fully committed to exploring Kratos and Atreus’ journey in depth. Season 1 will follow the father-son duo as they set out on a journey to scatter the ashes of their late wife and mother, Faye. Along the way, Kratos strives to guide Atreus in becoming a stronger god, while Atreus challenges his father to grow into a more compassionate and understanding human.
Besides Hurst and Vinson, the God of War season 1 cast is made up of Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn as Brok.
