The Walking Dead was full of memorable characters, each with their own brutal story, shocking decisions, and heart-wrenching losses. From the relentless survivors to the morally gray antiheroes, The Walking Dead gave fans some of the most iconic figures in television history. But it also left us with tantalizing ā€œwhat ifā€ scenarios that haunt hardcore viewers to this day.

What if the cunning Merle Dixon had come face-to-face with the calculating Negan? There’s a hidden, alternate universe of interactions that fans secretly dreamed of. We're talking a collision of personalities that could have changed alliances, sparked epic showdowns, and created unforgettable moments that never made it to screen. In this article, we shared five Walking Dead characters we wish had met each other in the beloved zombie series.

1. Shane Walsh and Negan

Shane Walsh, the hot-headed, morally complicated former sheriff’s deputy, thrived on impulsive decisions. Negan, on the other hand, was a master manipulator, charismatic, and brutally strategic in his approach to leadership and intimidation.

A meeting between these two would have been explosive. Shane’s quick temper and tendency to act without fully thinking through consequences would clash spectacularly with Negan’s cold calculation and penchant for psychological warfare.

Could Shane have survived Negan’s infamous baseball bat, Lucille, or would his impulsiveness have gotten the better of him? Beyond violence, just imagine the tension of a battle of wits, with Shane trying to assert control and Negan effortlessly undermining him. This encounter represents the ultimate ā€œwild card vs. mastermindā€ scenario.

2. Ā Merle Dixon and Shane Walsh

Even though Merle Dixon and Shane technically existed in the same early survivor camp outside Atlanta, the show never gave fans the payoff of seeing these two volatile personalities interact directly. And that’s a huge missed opportunity because the chemistry, tension, and narrative possibilities between them could have been nothing short of explosive.

Merle and Shane shared several traits that make this hypothetical pairing so compelling. Both were alpha personalities and were willing to do whatever it takes to survive. Merle thrived on chaos and control. He was a streetwise opportunist whose loyalty was earned on his own terms, and whose aggression was as much a defense mechanism as it was a survival strategy.

Shane, meanwhile, was a ticking time bomb of emotional intensity. He was driven by fear, jealousy, and a desire to protect Rick’s group, often crossing moral lines without hesitation. If the show had given them a chance to meet onscreen, the dynamic would have been electric.

Imagine the tension in a scavenging mission or a life-or-death standoff against walkers. Neither man took orders well. Their interactions could have ranged from heated arguments to full-blown physical confrontations, constantly testing who had the upper hand.

3. Hershel Greene and King Ezekiel

Hershel Greene and King Ezekiel would have made an incredible pairing because both were leaders, but in very different ways. Hershel was calm, wise, and deeply principled, always thinking about morality and the long-term well-being of his people. Ezekiel, by contrast, inspired through charisma, vision, and hope, giving his community a sense of purpose even in the darkest moments.

Seeing them together could have shown fans a fascinating exchange of ideas. We could have seen Hershel grounding Ezekiel in practical, ethical decision-making, and Ezekiel encouraging Hershel to think beyond survival toward inspiring others. It's a bummer that Hershel met a tragic end before Ezekiel was introduced into the series.

4. Ā The Governor and Negan

The Governor and Negan meeting would have been the ultimate confrontation of two of The Walking Dead’s most infamous villains. The Governor was ruthless, manipulative, and terrifyingly unpredictable, in contrast to Negan, the charismatic tyrant with his own brand of lethal charm and strategic brutality.

What would have happened if these two iconic antagonists had crossed paths? Fans can imagine everything from a tense, psychological duel to an all-out battle, with each man testing the other’s ego, leadership, and cunning. This encounter would surely have been explosive and deadly, with many of their men caught in the crossfire.

5. Michonne and Shane Walsh

Michonne and Shane never crossed paths in The Walking Dead. She joined Rick's group well after Shane’s story ended. But that hasn’t stopped us from imagining what their interaction might’ve looked like. We imagine that Michonne would have instantly seen through Shane, not trusting his motivations, questioning his reckless survival instincts, and reacting sharply to his volatility.

I mean, remember how she treated the Governor when she first met him? Her guard was up instantly. She knew there was something sinister to him even if she couldn't quite put her finger on it. We imagine she would have been the same way with Shane.

Shane’s arc in the early seasons showed him devolving from loyal friend to unstable loose cannon, willing to push morality aside when it suited his sense of protection and survival. In contrast, Michonne was a composed, disciplined warrior whose strategic mind and moral filters guided her actions even in the most brutal moments.

She would have recognized Shane’s instability immediately, likely viewing him as too unpredictable and dangerous to trust. Perhaps she might have even confronted or disarmed him before things escalated.

The Walking Dead is available to stream on Netflix.
