Ever since The Walking Dead ended its run on AMC in 2022, the fandom has lived in a state of hopeful anticipation. Sure, some of the spinoffs have been great and all. Dead City saw Maggie and Negan navigating the chaos of a post-apocalyptic New York, Daryl Dixon followed the rugged, survivalist journey of one of the franchise’s most beloved characters, and The Ones Who Lived brought back familiar faces in ways that thrilled longtime viewers.
Yet, despite these successes, fans have been left wondering the same thing. Could all these characters ever reunite in one massive, universe-spanning event? In December 2025, news broke that fans might finally get the reunion they had been dreaming about for years. According to a report at the time from industry insider Daniel Richtman, he stated that AMC is reportedly developing a Walking Dead crossover spinoff series.
It is believed to be a show that brings together the characters of the various spinoffs. That could mean we could see Rick and Michonne from The Ones Who Lived, Maggie and Negan from Dead City, and Daryl and Carol from Daryl Dixon all appear in one series again.
But while fans were over the moon about this crossover spinoff rumor, the excitement quickly died down after AMC offered no confirmation. Recently, Walking Dead director Greg Nicotero appeared on The Brandon Davis Show as a guest and confirmed that a "reunion-type show" has been the topic of discussion for a "couple of years" now. While this was great news to learn, we've just learned of some not-so-good news from the Walking Dead creator himself about the subject.
Robert Kirkman breaks silence on The Walking Dead crossover spinoff

In a new interview with MovieWeb, Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman was asked about if he could set the record straight about the rumored crossover spinoff. While he was forthcoming with information, it's not something that fans will be excited to hear about. Kirkman basically acknowledged that while the idea of a crossover is great, executing such a project would be extremely complex.
He mentioned how he and the show's creative team would love to see the characters from The Walking Dead universe come back together. In other words, they recognize the appeal of uniting the different spinoffs into one series. However, there are no concrete plans or announcements yet. Kirkman even goes on to mention how coordinating a full crossover with all the characters would be a huge logistical challenge because each actor has their own schedule and commitments.
He then wraps up his statement by pretty much saying that he's uncertain if the crossover spinoff will ever happen. He told MovieWeb that it’s possible it could happen someday, but it’s also possible it may never happen. Right now, he just doesn’t have a definite answer and can’t make any promises to fans.
"No, look, I think it's something that, internally, we would all love to see these characters come back together because everything has been separated out and we're exploring the individual characters and all the various spin-offs and things. But yeah, there's certainly nothing that can be talked about just yet. And that would be a logistical undertaking just because everybody has their own schedules and things like that. So, it may never happen, may happen in the future, who knows? As I sit here right now, can't answer that."
Like any Walking Dead fan, I personally would love to see a full-blown crossover happen. The idea of Rick, Daryl, Maggie, Michonne, and all the other characters sharing the screen again is the kind of event that could feel like a true celebration of the franchise. That said, I also understand Kirkman’s hesitation. Coordinating actors’ schedules could be a logistical nightmare, and the risk of underdelivering is high.
Still, even the possibility alone is enough to get fans excited. If they could pull it off, it would be a historic moment in TV. But until then, I’m holding onto hope. I'll continue to imagine what that reunion could look like, and enjoy every spinoff as its own piece of the larger puzzle.
