We have good news to report, Walking Dead fans. One of the zombie franchise's best spinoffs is about to receive a new season on Netflix very soon. How soon? We're talking at the end of this month. The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2 is set to make its landing on Netflix this December!
We're completely surprised by this news because we didn't think it was actually going to happen. While we knew Dead City season 2 was coming to Netflix eventually, an official release date hadn't been given. As we've reached the end of the year, we thought a 2025 release was out the window. But it looks like Netflix had other plans. With little notice, Dead City season 2 is officially arriving on the platform before the year is over!
Dead City season 2 is set for a December 2025 release on Netflix
While Netflix hasn’t made a major promotional announcement, it has quietly posted a release date banner on the show’s title page on the platform. Drum roll, please! Dead City season 2 is slated to be released on Netflix on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025.
Yes, that's New Year's Eve. Perhaps you're not a person who enjoys loud parties or crowded celebrations, and if that’s the case, this release date might be perfect for you. Instead of ringing in the new year out on the town, you can kick back at home and spend New Year’s Eve diving back into the gritty, walker-filled world of Dead City.
While an exact release time hasn't been revealed, the new episodes could potentially drop at 12:00 a.m. PT/3:00 a.m. ET. That's when Netflix typically releases new original content on its platform. However, Dead City season 2 is considered licensed content. That said, the release time could vary.
Dead City serves as the fifth series in The Walking Dead franchise. In addition, it's also the first sequel. Created by Eli Jorné, the zombie series follows Maggie and Negan as they traverse through the dangerous, walker-infested streets of post-apocalyptic Manhattan in search of Maggie's kidnapped son, Hershel. If you recall from the original series, the duo didn't have the best relationship after Negan killed Glenn, Maggie's husband.
In Dead City season 2, their relationship is still rocky. With rival factions vying for control of Manhattan and the looming threat of the New Babylon Federation, Maggie and Negan find themselves on opposing sides of this struggle. Jeffrey Dean Morgan reprises his iconic role as Negan, while Lauren Cohan returns as Maggie.
The season 2 cast also includes Gaius Charles, Željko Ivanek, Mahina Napoleon, Lisa Emery, Logan Kim, Dascha Polanco, Keir Gilchrist, Kim Coates, Pooya Mohseni, and many others.
Do you know what else comes out on Dec. 31? The Stranger Things series finale. Most Walking Dead fans are also fans of that sci-fi series. However, the good news is that the final episode of Stranger Things won't drop on Netflix until 5:00 p.m. PT/8:00 p.m. ET. That said, you’ll have plenty of time earlier in the day to dive into Dead City season 2 without having to choose between the two.
Dead City season 3 is currently in the works and is expected to premiere sometime in 2026. However, it's unknown if Netflix will eventually get its hands on it.
