AMC will premiere season 2 of The Walking Dead: Dead City on May 4. The promotional videos for this season reveal lots of action and confrontations. Maggie and Negan return, this time on opposite sides, as many groups battle for control of Manhattan.
The first season of Dead City opened TWDU to new areas of the United States. Set in post-apocalyptic Manhattan was quite a departure from the heavily wooded and rural setting of the main series. It was exciting to see NYC like never before.
Many events in the season 1 finale set events in motion for the upcoming season.
How did The Walking Dead: Dead City end?
Maggie, played by Lauren Cohan, set out to do two things in Dead City. The first was rescuing her son Hershel, and the second, exacting revenge on Negan, who, she has never forgiven for the brutal killing of her husband, Glenn (Steve Yeun). After the success of the rescue, her son informs her that she has long been neglecting him in favor of her obsession with Negan. Hershel has grown very bitter because he feels unseen by his own mother. By the end of the episode, Maggie vows to finish things with Negan in order to let go and focus on being Hershel's mother.
Hershel is played by Logan Kim, and by the end of the episode, viewers become privy to the fact that while in the presence of the Dama, Hershel's pinky toe was chopped off. He suffered greatly at the hands of his abductors, and his bitterness regarding his mother only continues to grow.
Negan, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, was betrayed by Maggie and left with the Croat and the Dama, who is really the one who runs things. She proceeded to blackmail Negan with the knowledge of what she took from Hershel, threatening to return for more if Negan didn't bend to her will. She desires to take over the island and needs leaders like Negan as enforcers.
Ginny, a young orphan is played by Mahina Napoleon, was formerly under the care of Negan after the death of her father. When she comes to Manhattan to save Negan, he lashes out at the girl and in his anger, reveals he is responsible for her father's death. She was not happy being brought back to the Bricks, Maggie's home base.
Perlie Armstrong, played by Gaius Charles, accompanied Ginny back to the bricks as he traveled back to New Babylon. Learning more about why Negan killed the men and his experience on the island greatly altered him. He lies to the community's leader, The Prefect (Jasmin Walker), telling her that did, in fact, kill Negan. A lie that will likely come back to haunt him. New Babylon's leaders tell Armstrong they are very interesting in the Croat's methane production. She even subtly threatens his young daughters.
The Croat, portrayed by Željko Ivanek was disappointed to learn that Negan has changed much since he last saw him. He firmly believes he can bring him back to the dark side and introduces him to the Dama, who viewers find out is the big bad in this series. The Croat has high hopes for Negan joining their forces to take over the city.
The Dama, portrayed by Lisa Emery is a calm, calculating leader who appears to be in complete control. She informs Negan of her plan, and the role she expects him to play, threatening to hurt Hershel even more if he doesn't comply. Her main goal is to run things in Manhattan with Negan at her side.
Season 1 of The Walking Dead: Dead City is streaming on Netflix. Be sure to get in a rewatch or perhaps watch for the first time before the May 4 season 2 premiere on AMC and AMC+.
