Was issue 170 of The Walking Dead comic book series any good? Here are the positives and negatives from the August 2017 issue titled ‘On The Road’.

For a time when the zombie apocalypse is supposed to be a calm place, things don’t seem to be slowing down one single bit in the world of The Walking Dead. The popular comic book series continued throwing down some huge storylines in issue 170.

Released on August 2, 2017, the issue titled ‘On The Road’ followed the group on the road to Ohio to meet with Stephanie and the leader from her community. However, that was just the tip of the iceberg.

If you haven’t yet read this issue of The Walking Dead yet, be sure to do so or CHECK OUT THE FULL RECAP before reading on since there are going to be lots of spoilers below from the August issue.

So, the biggest takeaway from this issue is that there were tons of secrets out there. Siddiq confessing to Eugene about being romantically linked to Rosita was a huge challenge for him and something that ate away at him for a long time. However, it will be interesting to see how Eugene reacts to this news.

Past that, Jesus wanting to move to The Hilltop with Aaron and saying that he loves him is something huge. Of course, they were a couple at this time, but those words had not really been said to this point. Rick may not like this too much, as he puts a lot of trust in Jesus and Aaron in Alexandria.

Negan took a back seat in this issue to Dante. Maggie had sent him to follow the former leader of The Saviors and prisoner in Alexandria because she didn’t trust him to not be locked up. However, that decision seemed to eat away at her a little bit and distract her from her travels back to The Hilltop. So far, Negan hasn’t called out Dante, but based on what he said about ‘people’, there is a chance he knows he’s being followed.

Still, the thing that should have most people talking is Dwight. While many fans were likely hoping his emotional wounds would heal with time and he would start to regret threatening Rick, that definitely does not seem to be the case. Now, he seems more dangerous than ever, and Rick will need to keep an eye on him.

The panels with Mikey and Rick were fantastic, They were as much about Rick’s loss of Andrea, Lori, and others as it was about Mikey’s parents. The two shared a genuinely emotional moment, which can be really hard to capture in comic book form, especially in such a short visit.

Overall, this was a solid issue that seemed extremely short because of everything that was happening. The stories were told in a quick and interesting way and it all feels like it is leading to something big on the horizon.

Next: TWD 171 will feature a strange new character

Next month, The Walking Dead will focus on the group arriving in Ohio to meet with Stephanie and her people, but with the situation between Siddiq and Eugene as well as not knowing if the new group will be hostile, this should be an interesting issue in September.
