Matt Frewer – Max Headroom himself – joins Fear TWD cast
The cast of Fear the Walking Dead is getting bigger with the addition of Matt Frewer, the man who brought the iconic Max Headroom to life.
Matt Frewer is joining the Fear the Walking Dead cast in season 5. This incredibly talented actor has appeared in numerous movies, television shows and animated series over the past 35 years, including 1980s icon Max Headroom, and he’s joining the Fear cast as an as-yet unnamed character.
Fear the Walking Dead showrunner Ian Goldberg revealed the big news during his interview with Entertainment Weekly, where he and Andrew Chambliss were talking about the much-anticipated return of Daniel Salazar (Ruben Blades).
Goldberg threw the casting news out so casually that many people didn’t even pick up on it until days later: “We also have Matt Frewer joining the show, a fantastic actor. We don’t want to say too much about the character he’s playing, but we’re excited about it.”
So far, Fear the Walking Dead showrunners have remained mum about the plethora of new cast members in season 5, including Karen David, Cooper Dodson, Ethan Suess and Bailey Gavulic.
The addition of Frewer to the cast is a big deal for children of the 1980s who grew up connecting Frewer with characters like Max Headroom and the lovable (and often misguided) dad Big Russ in Honey I Shrunk the Kids. And for Stephen King fans, Frewer was a standout in the epic made-for-television miniseries The Stand, where he brought the Trashcan Man to life.
Given his experience on The Strand, which is very much in keeping with the post-apocalyptic vibe in Fear the Walking Dead, Frewer will be right at home with the cast. In fact, this isn’t the first time he’s worked with Jenna Elfman. The duo worked together on Cyberworld 3D, an IMAX movie at Universal Studios.
Fear the Walking Dead returns on June 2 at 9pm on AMC.
