The Walking Dead’s third and last part of the final season is scheduled to air in the fall of 2022. Everyone in the fandom and many media outlets speculate how things will end. With so many ideas of how it should end, the question is, will any ending satisfy the fandom?

Walking Dead director and SFX master Greg Nicotero has stated that fans will “without a doubt” be pleased with the ending. This is a bold statement, but it is encouraging. Nicotero had the honor of directing and portraying a walker one last time in the final episode.

Fans have long expected the reappearance of Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) for at least the series finale, but it doesn’t seem like that wish will come to fruition. Lincoln was in the states for a very brief time before filming wrapped, so if he does make an appearance, it won’t be for any significant length of time.

The Walking Dead’s final season

As with any series that comes to an end, fans all have different ideas of hows things should end. Everyone has a favorite character they expect certain events to happen to, and although it would be nice to see each storyline neatly wrapped up, this isn’t going to happen. Unfortunately, with only eight episodes remaining, certain things will be left unresolved.

Viewers will at least see the stories of Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Daryl (Norman Reedus) continue, as they will all be featured in the spinoff series. Negan and Maggie will star in Isle of the Dead, a spinoff set in Manhattan, while Daryl will be off on his adventure in Europe. Reedus has stated in several interviews that you never know who Daryl will encounter during his story.

The midseason finale episode saw many cliffhangers that fans hope to see resolved. Lance Hornsby (Josh Hamilton) and the Commonwealth military took over the communities of Alexandria, Hilltop, and Oceanside. It isn’t clear if this was with or without Governor Pamela Milton’s (Laila Robins) knowledge. Aaron (Ross Marquand), Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam), Daryl, and Maggie have gotten themselves exiled from all communities for coming against the Commonwealth and siding with Riverside. At the same time, Connie (Lauren Ridloff) and her group have outed the Miltons to the Commonwealth residents for their shady dealings.

Many characters have vanished throughout the series without an explanation; fans will have to imagine what they think happened to them. Or perhaps they will appear in an episode of Tales of the Walking Dead or the movies if those ever get to begin production.

It is interesting to read people’s speculations about the last eight episodes. And though many fans may be happy with the ending, the consenses is that the majority won’t be pleased as it is difficult to please everyone.  Let us know what you think will happen at the end or what your deepest wish for the end would be in the comments below.
