Will there be a season 12 of The Walking Dead?
By Renee Hansen
The Walking Dead aired its first episode on October 31, 2010, and viewers who watched that premiere episode were hooked immediately. The introduction of Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) was iconic, especially to fans of the comic book series created by Robert Kirkman, who already knew this character well. The final episode of season 11 aired in November 2022. Will there be a season 12?
Sadly, there will be no season 12 of The Walking Dead. The eleventh season was the final chapter of this story, and as disappointing as that may be, there is much more to come in the form of several spinoff series. Some good news: fans of the series can watch all 11 seasons on Netflix.
The Walking Dead’s final season consisted of 24 episodes, released in three parts. Part 1 aired in 2021, with part 2 premiering in February 2022, and the third and final installment began airing in October 2022. Fans were pleasantly surprised with the series ending, as many felt it would be difficult to do the series justice in a short amount of time.
On October 19, 2023 Lionsgate Home Entertainment will release the complete collection of The Walking Dead series, seasons 1-11 in a 54-disc.
The Walking Dead universe
Never fear; the fandom is far from ending.
Fear the Walking Dead was renewed for an eighth season, the series last. The season will be released in two parts, the first concluded in June 2023, and part 2 will premiere on AMC and AMC+ on October 22. This season will feature a seven-year time jump which should make for quite an exciting ending to this series. Part 1 would showcase Morgan Jones (Lennie James), and he would be featured in his final episode during the midseason finale. He has set off to find his old friend, Rick Grimes, so perhaps he will appear in a spinoff one day. The second part of the season will see Madison (Kim Dickens) reunited with some of her old friends and feature the return of Troy Otto (Daniel Sharman).
The Walking Dead: Dead City, the first direct spinoff featuring Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), premiered on AMC and AMC+ on June 18, 2023. The first season concluded in July 2023, and the series has been renewed for a second season. The first episodes of this series were set in Manhattan and saw the duo searching for Maggie’s son Hershel (Logan Kim), who was abducted. They encounter new villains, and things are set up to continue into the next season.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will see Norman Reedus reprise his role as Daryl in his own series. He will travel to France but, upon arrival, has no memory of how or why he is there. He will encounter a group of nuns who believe he is the messenger to carry a young boy, Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi), to fulfill his destiny to “lead the revival of humanity.” Daryl Dixon season 1 wrapped filming in March 2023 and released on AMC and AMC+ on September 10. This series has been renewed for a second season.
The third new series, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, will see the return of Rick and Michonne (Danai Gurira). The series wrapped filming in May 2023 and will release in 2024. This series will continue the “epic love story” of Rick and Michonne and focus on the Civic Republic, the organization Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) traded Rick to advance her standing in their ranks.
Walking Dead spinoffs crossover
At the 2023 NYCC Walking Dead universe, chief content officer Scott M. Gimple was asked if there could be another season of The Walking Dead, including a crossover of the three newest spinoffs.
"“That isn’t specifically planned. It would be good, though, to see. The dream would be that these shows somehow converge in some way, narratively. I’m not against it.”"
While many fans would love to see this, it seems pointless to have ended the series only to start it up again. The Walking Dead universe is in a new phase of TWDU with the spinoffs, which has been a refreshing change of pace as the original series lost some luster in recent seasons.
