AMC: Walking Dead spinoffs unaffected by WGA & SAG/AFTRA strikes
By Renee Hansen
During the second quarter earnings discussion with Wall Street analysts, Deadline reports that AMC CEO Kristin Dolan provided an update for The Walking Dead universe spinoff’s upcoming release dates. While the ongoing WGA and SAG/AFTRA strikes have left many questions for production, The Walking Dead spinoffs will not be affected.
The Walking Dead universe will have three new series premieres scheduled for 2023 and 2024 on AMC. All three projects have fortunately been completed ahead of the strikes.
Dolan said:
"We completed production of these three Walking Dead extensions before the recent Screen Actors Guild strike and work stoppage. Let me just take a moment to address both the current SAG and WGA strikes. We greatly value the work of our creative partners and hope these disputes can be resolved as quickly and as fairly as possible. We greatly value the work of our creative partners and hope these disputes can be resolved as quickly and fairly as possible. In the short term, the reality for AMC Networks is that we have a pipeline of finished shows that will allow us to continue to serve our viewers across all of our platforms for the remainder of this year and well into 2024."
New Walking Dead spinoffs
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will premiere on AMC on September 10, 2023, at 9 p.m. ET. This series will see the return of Daryl Dixon in a series of his own that will see actor Norman Reedus reprise his role. Set and filmed in France, Daryl Dixon will expand this character’s story as he finds himself in France. This series will drastically differ from the flagship series in tone and landscape and be what Reedus calls a reboot for the character.
Fear the Walking Dead, in its final season, will premiere season 8, part 2, on October 22, 2023, at 9 p.m. ET. This segment of six episodes will conclude the stories of the characters featured in this series which premiered in 2015. Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) returned in season 7 after being thought dead for years. She will reunite with several friends, including Victor Strand (Colman Domingo). A shocking announcement for the final episodes is the return of Troy Otto (Daniel Sharman), who was assumed dead after being bashed in the head with a hammer and washed away by the Gonzalez Dam flooding in season 3.
The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live has a release set for 2024 and will see the return of Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira). This series will expand both characters’ stories while featuring their long-awaited reunion. Fans have longed to learn about what has happened with Rick and Michonne, who have never stopped trying to find each other. The epic love story of the powerhouse couple will continue in this six-part series.
Dead City and Daryl Dixon have been renewed for second seasons, which will likely see some delay due to the ongoing strikes.
